So I took the bike out earlier today for a quick ride. When I returned it smelled like eggs a bit and it's been doing that here and there recently. I just tried starting her up and it won't start. Lights turn on and I hear what I think is the starter but the engine doesn't start. Also previously when I flipped the ignition to 'Run' it used to make some clicking noises like it was getting ready for lack of a better term. It doesn't do that anymore when I flip the switch.
I've been reading around about the egg smell and I guess the voltage regulator goes bad and causes the battery to overheat and leak acid? Seems to explain why my bike doesn't start.
I guess I need a new voltage regulator, battery, anything else?

Check every electrical component you can: http://fzronline.com/wiki/doku.php?id=v ... flow_chart
There is always a good chance that the VR took something else out with it when it died, in addition to your battery.

1994 FZR600R Molested and rigged by the PO... BUT, I got her cheap, and she runs pretty good so I can't really complain!

I'd start by visually checking the battery and measuring the voltage, not reading about smells and guessing.

1990 FZR 1000, 1993 engine, terrible state... but improving.

OK so I pulled the battery today. It looks like the levels were pretty low so I filled it with distilled water and have it hooked up to a charger now. One thing I noticed is there is what appears to be a vent tube in here but it's not hooked up to anything! I'm really new to motorcycles so I'm not sure if the vent tube should be hooked up to the battery? It's an Everstart 12A-A. I'm guessing if the tube isn't hooked up the battery just vents straight out over the battery or does this battery not require ventilation?

Another thing I noticed when I pulled the battery is the terminals were towards the front of the bike which seems a little suspect with the fuel tank right there. I'm guessing it should face the other way?

Doesn't really matter. As long as you don't touch your wrench or screwdriver to the positive lead and the tank at the same time. Won't kill you but it will startle you for sure.fenix793 wrote:Another thing I noticed when I pulled the battery is the terminals were towards the front of the bike which seems a little suspect with the fuel tank right there. Burtonrider10022 thanks so much for linking that. I inspected the battery and found the levels were low so I filled it up and charged it. After that the bike started and I was able to take check the voltage with the revs up. Sure enough the voltage was pretty high around 17V at 3000rpm. Voltage in the white wires going to the voltage regulator looked good so I guess it's a bad VR. Will order a new one and report back when it arrives!

i had the same thing it was my battery that boiled but i replaced battery and it will not start now they is no spark i think its done some more damage and blown somthing else but i dont know what or how to test it need help urgent

Tiddy I'm still really new to this bike and bikes in general but from what I understand you have to charge the battery before using it. After refilling my battery I tried starting the bike and it didn't work. I had to charge with a charger at 2amps for several hours before anything happened. I'm sure someone else can help a little more but when you flip the engine run button do you hear the fuel pump come on? When you hit the start button do you hear anything? When my battery was low I didn't hear the fuel pump and when I tried starting it just made a clicking sound. My battery's voltage was below 13V at that point. After charging it beyond 13V the bike successfully started.
If the battery does check out then I think you may need to grab the circuit diagram and a voltmeter and start checking all the wires from the battery onward. It's possible something else got taken out when the VRR went bad.
