96 fzr 600 wont start

Post by tprince1223 »

ok guys this one is bugging me, i have a 96 fzr 600 with 16k on it and it was running good for about 2 weeks and now all of a sudden it wont start. it tries to but just wont stay running unles i open the throttle all the way. This is my first bike btw so bare with me. so 3 things for a motor to run, air, fuel and spark. i pulled the tank and checked the fuel filter and the pump and they both look and sound good. i checked the air box and filter and they are both good. i dont know the last time the carbs were cleaned. i tested the 4 plugs and they were all arching . they did have some carbon on them but were sparking. ive been doing alot of research and alot of people are saying check the stator and the VR. Would that allow the bike not to start? the battery is good and not low. i dont have a multimeter to check Ohms and volts for anything yet. anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hey, sounds similar to mine, i have a 97.
I'm sorta a noob myself, but here's some stuff/hints i've learned with mine.

Few things:
im confused- Does it not start at all?
(first you said it won't start, then you said it won't stay running)

Mine gives me starting problems sometimes if I don't have a freshly-charged battery (i need a new batt.)
First couple days off the charger are great, but after that it won't have enough power to kick over.
It'll give me enough to power the lights on, makes the engine click, but then fades out.
Specially now that it's cooler outsider, the bikes need some extra battery to start up.
If you don't have a battery tender, i'd say go get one and try that. specially before the battery gets too low.

When my battery is full- once in a while i need to start it slow. After i turn the switch to run, let it sit for a few seconds (it ticks a little) and THEN try to start.

Newbie questions : Are you opening the choke and petcock when you start the bike?
If it's starts, but then shuts off unless you have open throttle, maybe choke isn't opening.
That's something else you wouldn't notice so much until it's colder.

Last dumb thing: Are you trying to go into gear with the kick stand down?
The bike will automatically turn off if so.

:shocker
(just wanted to use that smiley)

Good Luck

Hey man i appreciate your response, it will not start at all unless the throttle is fully open then it stays on but as soon as i let go of the throttle it dies, im not trying it with the choke on because the handle is broken the choke is off. I was thinking that same exact thing about the battery i need to get a tender ASAP. And no the bike is in netural. I think i need some new plugs also cause the were dirty with carbon and they are not giving a blue/white spark. Yeah i let the fuel pump click a few times and get the fuel in the carbs. Thx!
