New yamahammer. Few issues

Post by fishinfool88 »

First time FZR owner here. Road yamahas for about 10 years now, from my 78 xs up to my current 09 r6. My girl just decided she wanted to ride so I picked up a 1997 fzr 600 for a good price. It's missing some fairings, needs a bit of love here and there, but I think it's worth fixing. I'm having a few issues with it though. I got it, and the battery is cooked. The headlight seems to stay on the entire time, even with the key off. There is also a relay under the seat constantly clicking. I am unsure if maybe the previous owner has gotten into it or not. It also seems to foul plugs every 100 miles. I'm told it needs the carbs synced, which I can perform. However I didn't know if there were any other common issues that would cause these to foul plugs. I'd appreciate any help or direction you guys could send me in. Thanks.

Worn emulsion tubes will do it. Make sure to cleans the carbs and check them while you're in there. You'll want to take note of the jet sizes and needles. It could have a jet kit and be jetted incorrectly.

The headlight definitely is an issue. You'll have to follow a wiring diagram to see where it's hooked up incorrectly. The clicking could be from the fuel pump trying to prime bowls. There is also the starter solenoid that will just click when there isn't enough juice in the battery to get the bike to crank.

Throw up some pictures of the ol girl when you get a chance. And most importantly....welcome!

What xs? 400, 650... I currently have a 78 xs400 in my shop that is going to get the business over the winter.

It was an xs11. Great bike. Should've never sold it. Had 130k when I ditched it. I investigated further. The ignition switch has been tampered with. Blue electrical tape is probably not factory. The relay issue seemed to be toasted battery related. I did take off down the road and noticed that gas was puking out the air intake on the carbs when wot. Bike wouldn't rev over 7k. I think its just a matter of adjusting those carbs, and a final sync. Needed to lube the clutch cable, and I figure give the chain a good soak and lube. Maybe take a link out, its dragging on the swing arm. I'll get pics up as soon as I'm near a computer. I'm on my pummel currently. Any ideas on where to come across plastics cheap? Don't need to be anywhere near perfect, just need something.
