300 wide tire on fzr600
hi everyone, im new to this forum but not motorcycles or custom fabrication. i've been looking on this forum to see if anyone has ever done a 300 wide wheel on their fzr600? i know i would like to attempt it, i have a diagram done up for a custom swingarm that will accept the 300 wheel and keep the stock length, well maybe a couple of inch over stock but i dont belive it will affect it's cornering abilities that much? but i could be wrong. anyhow, the idea is to have a wider wheel for better traction at high and low speeds, that and where im in NB canada, the roads are shite! so something with a little more traction for the turns will help quite abit. ill post my diagram as soon as i switch to my home computer. i hope you guys like my design and hope for any input from people who have more experience with these bikes.

YOu will LOSE traction with a 300mm tire. (less pounds of load per square inch of footprint)plus, you wont need to worry about turns as the bike will be completely unwilling to take them.
It will SERIOUSLY affect handling0in a negative way.
You will have big time chain clearance issues (I don't know how this can be done without using a jackshaft sprocket setup)

Re: 300 wide tire on fzr600
Ah, okay. thanks for pointing that out, i thought that a wider tire would increase stability and traction, and if the wheel base was relatively close to stock, handling wouldn't be affected.
thanks for the reply, im kinda glad that i posted it up here first. "BUT" I might just make one just for the hell of it, didnt go to college for 3 years taking a machinist course and welding for nothing, might as well make something unique. even if it will handle like shite! it would certainly be different. i've never seen and older bike like this with a wide tire on it, so i'll try it out, if the swingarm fabrication makes it turn like a chopper, "EBAY!"
i'll let everyone know how the prefab works out and ill post the design and mock fab pics when i get it done.

Re: 300 wide tire on fzr600
Also, i think i might try fabricating a custom single sided swingarm for this bike, if that works out i may just have to make more of them and sell them to people wanting them, that way they just have to plug and play and the got a single side swing arm FZR600. let me know what you guys think of that idea?
Re: 300 wide tire on fzr600
I think the single sided swingarm is something people might go for. However, the newest FZR's out there are now 13 years old. You're going to have a hard time finding enough people willing to spend the money to make it financially viable for you. But if you're doing it because you can, then I won't try to stop you.

This goes for a lot of aftermarket and custom stuff for the FZR. There just aren't enough around anymore to make money from components.blensen wrote:I think the single sided swingarm is something people might go for. Would love to see the design you come up with. We already have users on here with single-sided swing arms off of Hondas (viewtopic.php?f=30&t=181&hilit=vfr&start=75#p33988).

Re: 300 wide tire on fzr600
im not really worried about making a huge killing of the swingarms, im just planning on making them because they look really cool. using the VFR swingarm swap is just a headache, i want something i cant just take the old swingarm off and put the Single on, no welding, grinding or worring about possible damage to the bike. i got the chromoly steel pipe today. 1 piece of 1 1/2" X 6' and 2 piece of 1"x 6 ft. to the fun part of finding a good axel hub that would no throw off the alignment. might try finding a vfr hub. ill keep you posted.

Okay, here is the design i'm gonna go with.

It is of good construction, will handle the load of the bike and rider, and i like the looks of the tubular design. that and it will be easier to construct.
one i get the measurements down im gonna do a mock fab and a test fit. will post pics when i get to that.
