Hello all - new mamber :) tech help needed!
greetings to all. Very happy to find this site straight away!!
just got my first road bike, fzr600, 1989, ive been head over heels for these bikes since i was about 5, when my dad had one and ive been managed to grab one which is pretty much exactly the same as his that we can both strip and restore!!
I bought the bike off ebay as a non-runner/starter. it has pretty much full tax and mot and has been used reguarly until it wouldnt start one day...hence the sale.
i have now started to look for what thye problem is.... i have, so far tried...
engine turns over fine when tring to start, the most youll get is a backfire.
checked all 4 plugs all ar ok. and all are sparking when you try to start.
i have taken off main fuel hose to carb fuel fail, turned to run and this spurts out fuel for about 4 secs and looks like a priming sequence.
i then put back together and tried to start... still the same.
i suspected lowq fuel pressure or a blockage in the fuel rail maybe, so i put a little fuel into each carb via air inlet and tried again, still not even a splutter
any ideas??? i was sure id get at least a caugh out of it but nothing. as this is my first bike i dont know much about the tech side of things so help would be much appreciated.
heres the beast....

Welcome aboard Aaron.
Nice looker you have got yourself there
I am not a wrench, but it sounds to me like a fuel pump or carb problem.Does the fuel pump click when you turn the ignition on?

thanks mate i do like its looks myself
well it clicks and wines then stops (which im assuming was a priming sequence) should the pump continue to click and wine continuosly?!?!, and i was thinking myself it could be the fuel pump not giving enough fuel pressure, but after putting some fuel directly into all 4 inlets and trying it and not even getting a caugh out of it im a bit worried it may be something else.

check valve clearances.
I suspect your intakes are tight.
This equals poor compression-especially cold engine.
If you could get it to start, it would likely run okay.

i am now suspecting a weak spark, when i checked it was a yellow spark, i am told it needs to be a bright blue spark which is audible.
how is this rectified??... new coul, leads and plugs? or can this be caused by other factors. thanks

would be good if we knew where in the world you are as models vary in detail acros the world in the same year.
Please put that info in your personal profile so we can all see it later on.
I suggest you check that the battery be in top shape with fluid level & charge. Clean the contacts on the Voltage rectifier (under the LH seat fairing ), the connectors that go from the ignitor box to the coils . Be sure to clean the earthing points. Corrosion in these areas give weak sparks which can be "drowned" by flooding the bike with fuel. Always start the bike with the choke as these bikes hate starting cold.

if you do a search there are a list of voltages & resistance measurements that you could check BEFORE you get into spending money :-}
Unfortunately I am tied up socially or I would give you a link to said bits.

hi had the same trouble years ago when i serviced my fzr tried everything cdi, coils, leads battery,reg/rec, in the end, it was ngk plugs will never buy a set again !!!
they seemed to spark ok but when looking closer they were tracking down the side insulator . changed plugs and all were fine. hope you get it sorted these early babes are thin on the ground

head down bum up
Re: Hello all - new mamber :) tech help needed!
the plugs iv put in are ngk's. may attempt some irridium ones if worst comes to worst. and thanks for that, ill search for the tech info take the coils to work and get them tested cheers

MAJOR BREAKTHRU
decided to trace every bit of wiring and connections for breaks, bad earths etc. found a snapped wire... re soldered, tried it and it started first time . sounds absolutely awesome and running beautifully so i decided to put it all back together..... now another problem....
got as far as the top of my driveway riding it, and died, went to start again and u have to give it loads of gas to get it to run and will not go over idle even tho gas neally fully open (sounds like missfire/running on less than 4 when this is occuring!) but this soon clears and revs and idles sweet again, until u try to ride it and put load on the engine! then same thing starts again.
so any thoughts on this then??
SO close, but yet still so far away

That sounds like dirty fuel, did you drain tank, wash & re-fuel, clean gas filter and carbs?
Re: Hello all - new mamber :) tech help needed!
i drained cleaned and refilled tank with fresh fuel. havent changed filter or clkeaned carbs. is there an easy way to do this? or do they need to be removed and stripped??

T,
On FZR's there is NEVER an easy way. It is take the tank cover off and then the air box then the carbs.
Do one carb at a time or you could get confused as some have done in the past. When all 4 been cleaned and inspected for torn/worn diaphrams . Put the carbs back on, fire her up make sure she fires up ok (you could end up cleaning more than once as some people have also found.) DO NOT USE wire to clean jets use NYLON fish line at most if they are truely amess of Ethanol gum works
