Need help ASAP.. regarding cams...

Post by bweight »

Hey guys.. I managed to find a set of .5 over rings on ebay and was in the process of tearing the motor down again to put the old jugs back in with the new rings.. The intake cam wouldn't come out properly then it finally did.. Unfortunately, the part where the timing mark is, well it broke of in the "quide" channel.... I can't use it anymore I would imagine for fears that while running the motor the cam would shift and cause another catastrophic failure.. I do have the cams from the 400 motor and was wondering if they'd work in the 600..

I went to Yamaha-motor.com an checked the part #'s from the factory.... they are:

400 cam - 3BF-12171-00-00 600cam - 3HE-12171-00-00

The only difference you can see.. Next I went to both service manuals. in one section, the measurements are identical, or at least extremely close.. But in another section, they are slightly different.. I can't afford another cam, I'm already VERY low on $$$ since leaving my last place of employment, but I've gotta get this bike up and running..

Can I use the cams from my 400 in the 600 motor?

Any help, insight would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks.

Short answer is "YES, you can use the 400's cams in the 600.

Megacycle and the rest of the hot cam people spec the same cams for each size engine.

Yamaha's spec differences may reflect very minor differences which affect emissions.

Will it be optimum? Prolly not. Could it work out better(powerwise)? Yes. Could it work out worse-yes. In either case it is not going to be a big damn deal.

I'd do it without any additional worry.

There are plenty of FZR engines out there with chunks of that flange missing. There is no real side load on the cams. It sounds like yours broke over the timing mark..which sucks

Megacycle will weld the chunk back in and machine them for $60.

If you have a set of calipers and both cams are out it's very simple to measure the base circle and the max lobe height... then you can tell the difference between the two cams for yourself. (if you have a degree wheel and vee blocks you can chart out the lift profile of the cams too... but that sounds a little more involved than you want to get right now)
