had a quick question about first gear take off.

Post by Kylemil21 »

So the Last couple months i've been riding well, (ever since i bought the bike) Trying to Taking off slow.. Up untill about 3k rpm in first gear it has a small shutter untill you get a good rolling start, it doesnt do this if i take off from slightly higher RPM. only when i try to take off really slow. after about 5 mph its smooth as a babies bottom..

Anyways. back on topic, Any ideas on what this may be?, my first opinion was loose chain. but since then i've replaced the chain, new tires made sure all the mounts were tight, everything i could think of that would give me this issue.. Is this just normal of bikes? I have no prior experience before my current bike..

Thanks in advance
-Kyle.

Another part i forgot to mention. Its worst with higher loads (passenger etc.) if i feather the clutch it doesnt do this.. only if try to run between 1500-2200 RPM. if that makes a difference ;)

Well... You really aren't meant to idle away from a stop at 1500rpm. Seriously - this isn't a cruiser, it's a sport bike, and it needs to be revved up. It won't carburet cleanly until you are at some reasonable engine speed.

Ok thanks, I went riding with another guy today. He was driving a much newer bike, revv'd from take off at around 5k. I started to do the same .& noticed i have some clutch lock up issues when taking off at that high RPM's.. I dont have any slipping. just premature grabbing? is this due to old age/wearing of the clutch? I can burn through all 5 gears at 11k~ & can pull the front tire off the ground when shifting to second gear & have no slippage what-so-ever. so i was slightly concerned with this issue. any ideas?

Also i may have gave you inaccurate numbers. generally rolling start from a stoplight i take off around 3k, small shutter while it engages the then smooth through 3k+ andno problems with any other gear and ANY rpm range. could this be first gear giving out?or would it be more clutch problems? Also had the engine checked out & valves&sync seem to be where they need to be. Maybe i'm just putting to much thought into this & need to get on it a little more? :P

First gear is quite short; any mis-firing or drive train shudder will be magnified compared to a higher gear. It may be worthwhile adjusting your clutch.

I have the clutch handlebar adjusted out, so half a pull gives me full clutch, when i first bought the bike it was adjusted to a point where as soon as you released pressure the drive train engages, it feels a lot more comfortable at about an inch out with no free play once i apply handlebar pressure. Or do you mean adjust clutch at the case not at the bar?

Sounds like you need to adjust the carburetors. I can EASILY pull away from idle on my bike.

For example, this shows me taking off from idle, slipping the clutch, and then driving off in first from 1,237rpm. AFR in that region are pretty lean (higher than 15). No hesitation whatsoever. You can see that max rpm during clutch slip is 1,810.

Also, when was the last time your carbs were synched?

Its been since before the accident. but last time i had it checked D&C cycle said everything seemed up to par, timing/valves & sync & that at mid/high RPM he hasnt seen a bike that runs as smoothly as mine in years :P But i might of knocked something loose.. i'm not sure. Like i can pull away from an idle & take off just fine. .It just has wierd vibrations.. I guess i wont fully understand whats going on unless i ride a bike similar to mine that doesnt have this issue.

Also, I can rev the throttle from 1200 up, with no lag. no hesitation of any kind.. Its only when i try to take off slow.. also if get a rolling start, & coast at about 1400 rpm, like. 4-5 MPH. then open the throttle up. it doesnt shutter. its only under very light acceleration from 1200-2200 rpm... Maybe i should check my AFR during dyno.. Anywhere around springfield mo area that does this?

These bikes suck at low RPMs... keep the revs up. It will shutter at low RPMs - happened to me all the time.

As far as the clutch is concerned, you can do the following:

clutch seems like its still good, have it adjusted almost half way in at the handlebar it still feels fairly new, i have at least an inch that i can still tighten down at the bar, does that mean it still has plenty of life? or can they be adjusted all the way in & out even if the plates are worn down?

Chain could be too loose also. My thought is you just gotta give it a little more throttle, especially if it's chugging.

Yeh, bought a brand new chain shop put it on. less then 3 weeks ago. it moves like 3/4 of an inch both ways. old chain had like a 3 inch give. Thats what i THOUGHT was the culprit
