Guys i need help! busted case lug

Post by Kylemil21 »

OK, so heres the deal. I dropped my bike took a corner to wide & front tire caught the edge of the street & pulled me into grass where i proceeded to skid into an embankment of rocks. needless to say I think my engine might be scrapped. As she slid over a decent sized rock, it tore one of the bolts off of the case on the left hand side.

This isn't my engine but its very similar. Wanted to get your opinion on if this is replaceable, or if i should be looking for a new engine.

Where the red circle is. the bolt got ripped out of the mount. & took about a 1/4 inch piece of metal along with it. i havent had time to examine into it any further as of yet. due to bad weather in my area. will get better pictures uploaded in the next couple days..
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

hi did the same snotted off at a round about ,if it has just broke the thread off you will be ok it is the genny cover and holds no oil, if its more than the thread you could try some of the epoxy weld that's on the market , going down on that side can lead to a bent crank nose, bike gets really viby but you can't tell until you start it , worst case that is! hope its just the thread and you are back on the road soon

as hagalout said - JB weld. The first concern is whether the chunk that got removed will let the oil out. Run it with the remaining screws holding the cover and see if it works without spraying oil. Many people have saved cases with damage like this with some JB weld. If the crank is bent or the case is badly cracked and leaking, then go for replacement.

I got the bike started after the accident. & it sounded like it was out of oil. i only let it run for 3-4seconds & shut it off.. there was a small amount white smoke coming out of the hole in that casing..
bad news?
maybe the oil level was just low from when i tipped the bike?
And thanks. I feel a lot better knowing that this might not be a horrible fix unless there are more problems of course :]

And yes. it didnt break anything else off that i can notice as of now. Just broke the bolt mount & exposed a small hole where the bolt originally was. sounds like I need to go back to the scene & see if i can find that small piece of metal.

K,
Yamaha cases are made of any easy weldable alloy and any competent TIG or Oxy /acetalene welder can either build up the broken area or weld back the part (put the bolt in place first so it is on straight )

I would check your oil level & coolant level over the next few days whilst riding just in case there are problems else where I have seen cases where a severe jolt did the head gasket you will soon know by the copious amounts of white smoke (not just a little puff you saw )

Thanks for the tip Y_G.

I spend the last 3 days sanding & fiberglassing, more sanding & finally a touch of painting.
While i had everything tore down. i fixed the idle positioner (PO had loosened it completely out of its socket) & degreased the whole underbody,. along with the plastics that had some build up on them..
This is while the lowers were still in my shop, After i painted the tank cover

While repairing plastics I decided to shave the rear of the bike so there are no seams between plastics.. Turned out quite nice with my raised tail & LED lights!!
As you can see in this pic, Let me know what you think! Long ways from finished. but its at least respectable on the street (:

Love the way it looks with no seam lines between the plastics above the rear tire

. Also Another note. My first cyclinder isnt igniting. Havent pulled the plug yet ,but the exhaust is cold to the touch after 30 mins of riding..
So i'm only running on 3 cylinders. didnt know the bike would even start & drive on only three.. my guess is when i dropped her the plug must of flooded something of that nature. going to replace the plug & hopefully that will be the last of my "problems" for a while.

Looking for tips on what to do next! next project in mind is replacing the (foxeye?) style lights with longer rectangular black smoked chrome lights & mold them in to make it look natural.

Also, while im on the subject. Should i be looking for a couple hoses to reconnect my airbox tubes? Or are they OK to leave exposed the way they are?
