fzr600 intake valves??

fzr600 intake valves??
Today I checked the valve clearances on a project fzr 600 that I bought last week and found that the exhaust valves are within spec. but the intake valves are not. (.001wont even fit) from what i read this is very common for 91 fzr's. guessing that by replacing shims this would prob. be very temporary fix. So my question is would it be cheaper and easier to buy a complete top end with valves off ebay already together or maybe just fix intake valves. also would I need to re-shim all the valves (intake and exhaust) for clearance if it came out of a running bike that had good valve clearances. pls help!!

i ran into this back when i had my 89. it would have costed around 1000 for the shop to rebuild the head cause my intakes were actually bent beyond repair. i went online and got a head for 400 that had been done up nicely. i got lucky there

just not sure because exhaust side is good so would just need intake side valves???intake valve clearance good but not sure on cond. new head with valves only $125 on ebay prob just new gasket and bolt up. if valves were good on ebay head then clearance would prob. good on mine right?

assuming they are good but 125 sounds to good to be true! maybe, try talking to the seller and get some info, they cant lie to you piont blank. ask specific questions and if he gives you bs just move on

asked seller about condition and if the bike was running when removed. is it ready to bolt on and ride?? this is what he said;
the bike ran good with no ticking. i have no idea when the last valve service was done. sure, you can bolt them on and ride, but i really can't say how many miles they will go before service is needed. it would be a guess! i did ride this one a few dozen miles with no issues at all. thanks, john

looks to me like even if you do get that head you should at the very least try to clean up some of that carbon before putting it on your bike, if you have the tools i would suggest taking the valves out of the head to inspect/clean. shimming the valves isn't too hard, just alittle time consuming.

can you ask the seller if he had any problems starting it in the cold? if so the valves are junk.well they could just need to be adjusted. id try to get some kind of guarantee?? post on the clasifieds on the site too

I had the same problem with the intakes on my project bike not being able to get .001 feeler in. Being the intakes wear faster than exhaust just as you said, having 20K miles I just reshimed. Everything turned out to be just fine. I'd do the reshimming before looking into replacing valves. You should be fine as well.

yeah going to check what shims are and try to get away with changing shims that would be the easiest way and hell of a lot cheaper thanx.

If you end up going the valve route I have a ton of intake and exhaust valves from random FZR engines over the years.

That's the smart thing to do. But if .001 would not even fit, those valves took a beating. this is gona sound dumb but... curiosity is eating me alive!!! Why would the intake valves be damaged? i mean beyond the obvious, of course...
also 2 points for thought; with severely damaged valves its also safe to assume that the guides are damaged (ask me how i know!!!). number 2) properly tuned bike will clean its-self, removing carbon is more aesthetic. and it dont take much to mess up valve seats!

It is my understanding that if the intake valve clearances become too small, the valves can be pushed into the seats too far and become "tulip" shaped. Not to that extreme of course but you get the picture. that is how any valve wears since the stem is yanking the head of the valve into the seat, depending on the size and material the valve is made out of some time its not that noticeable it becomes more pronounced with lots of high rpm usage and valve float and weak material like the ones int he fzrpefrey wrote:It is my understanding that if the intake valve clearances become too small, the valves can be pushed into the seats too far and become "tulip" shaped.
