Bike wont turn over...starter relay clicks

Post by vmaxmike »

This just started happening after bike was starting and running fine a few days ago but got rained on a little bit over night. Now relay clicks when i press start button, but if I grab the section of the wire harness under left rear side panel right next to battery box and jiggle it, it starts!?
Both connections to starter relay look good, clean and tight. Battery is new and connections also clean and tight. Fuses same. I'll check the wiring more closely but any advice on the not so obvious would be appreciated. Tks

i would look for any chaffed or pinched wires. how are all the connections from the battery? like from the relay and down at the starter?

i had a problem with a pinched wire for the killswitch that drove me nuts for a day.

this has happened to me more times than i can count, and the culprit is usually not the relay-- its the battery terminals. When you hit the starter it charges the lines from the battery terminals, and if the screws are loose it will kick them up off the face of the terminal. (since like-charged particles repel each other). It is hard to see if the battery has box-type terminals (where you slide a backing square washer into the terminal box) since it looks like it is all good, -- until you turn it with a screwdriver and see how loose it can be.

THis will be the start of it, then the bike will start sputtering in a few days as it gets looser. When you pull on the wire you apply enough force to counter the "kick", and it starts and runs.

So-- try tightening up the battery terminals-

yeah, I've already checked those things as I stated originally, all clean and tight. I'll re-check though and delve into the wiring to see if anything looks suspicious. Tks

is your ground tight too (its on the back of the engine, right hand side looking down)?

the solenoid has two circuits one that dose the switching low amp (small wires) and the other had the big wires high amps that run to the starter so if you have the solenoid clicking the the control side is prob. ok you need to concentrate on the big wires and there connections i have a loose connection on the solenoid (starter relay) myself i am getting to after i have finished my rebuild its quite common so check that first
