Indicators flashing too quickly

Hi,

I've got an 89 Genesis and I've got a problem with the turn indicators flashing too quickly.

They flash at the speed like one of the bulbs has blown. I've got standard indicators not LED's and I've tried a replacement (second hand) flasher relay.

Does anyone have any idea what to try next?

The relay you are using is made for a certain load ie 2* the bulb wattage.
If the wattage of the bulbs are wrong it will either flash very quickly, too slowly or not at all

My suggestion is:-
a} read the relay info marked on it
b} look at one side of the bikes indicator bulbs
the two bulbs should be the same wattage and when the wattages are added together equal what is marked on the relay.

yeah I had this happen even though I don't have leds either. I put stock signals back on and the left would flash 2x as fast. I soldered in 1 10ohm 10 watt resistor from radio shack. 5 dollars for a 2 pack. Now they are exactly the same. The only thing I will add is that the resistor gets hot so buy some heat shrink tape too to protect your trunk.

that is a way to "fix" the problem not to solve the problem, I am VERY wary of hot resistors round combustibles like foam,plastic , oil & gas.

Winters coming please take a good look during the non-riding time and sort it. I would like my Cyber pals to out live me OK

I thought that was the way to solve it. That's the only reason why I went through the steps in the write up.
I checked the relay and the wires so I thought that was the only viable option. And then after I did the soldering I asked around about the resistor getting too hot and some of the guys said it was alright because it was only getting to 90f, so I put some heat shrink on it.

Note: I went and found where I had written all that and it was you and Darrin that I had talked to(that sounds like I'm pointing fingers, I'm not, appologies if it sounds that way), I guess you did hint back then that the heat might be bad thing. Oh well I will check this all again when I tear her down over the winter.

So long story short, use this as a temporary method if need be.

I was under the impression on yours that one set was LED then yeh resistors, may be I speed read it wrong I do not walk on water either :-} (well I do but I sink just like most folks )

Something else You both may have missed.

Pull the blinker/indicator bulbs out. Inspect both the bulb and it's holder for corrosion, also check the blinker grounds connections for corrosion. Clean as necessary then apply dielectric grease.

My bikes been stood for 4-5 days, Raining and windy as hell, the cover got blew off and she got drenched. I've just went out she started first time

This may be way off or sound stupid but cars have a fail safe that makes the blinker go double time if one of the lights is malfunctioning... just A thought. resistor sounds sketch... is there another heavier resistor that won't heat up if needed on the bike?

Mal, you better believe that I have dielectric on it. I was one of the guys that praised it to you. It was the first thing I checked when I put the new(old style) blinkers on the back.

Moppin. Usually on my car it will blink faster if one is burnt, or fell out of the holder. All of my blinkers were flashing just really fast on the one side. I asked Darrin (ragedigital) about a bigger resistor and radioshack apparently doesn't have a 10w bigger ohm resister in my state. I will say that I had 95-100 degrees on the resistor before I put the heat shrink on it and afterwards the temp was only about 78. So I'm happy with it.

I see.. thats cool you got it figured out... Do you happen to know if I will need a resistor to swap on the 09-10 R6 Tail light? I have heard yes and no.

Are the 09-10 R6's 2CO's? and you mean an integrated (with blinkers)? If so you will probably get the 4 way flash gremlin , all 4 blinkers flashing (I did). I solved the issue with an LED flasher relay, which also corrects the flash to fast problem if you have Front and Rear LEDs. Others bought a LED flasher relay and they had no luck concerning the 4 way flashing. I Think (can't remember) they used the resistors.

You may get lucky, but expect fun
