NEED HELP PLZ!! ELECTRICAL! (SOLVED!!)

Post by CiViC07AtX »

hey guys i feel like a dumb ass and im a noob to bikes in all..i have a FZR600 and i started charging my battery when i got home form work cause i left the lights on and i had a bunch of other stuff on my mind so i took a nap and accidently left the battery charging for a while and now my whole garage smells like sulfer and my bike wont start...at first i tried starting it and i was making a buzzing sound and wouldnt start..now it not even making a sound or lights arnt comming on :swear

wat could be wrong because i even tried taking the battery off and just hooked the battery terminals to the battery charger/starter and it still wouldnt start so im guessing its not something wrong with the battery..and ive started the bike before with just the battery charger/starter before...PLS HELP!! :notworthy: Noob

C,
take the battery out of the bike ! inspect it for fluid levels, my bet is you have dried out at least one cell.
Let me know.

ok i checked my battery and all of the cells were low and 2 of them were empty

but i dont get that the bike wouldnt start with just the using the my battery starter/charger on the terminal connection without the battery on them..shouldnt that start it?

C,
1} your FZR is very finnicky about the power it is fed to start so the battery charger may not be capable

2} drying the battery may have taken down other stuff too like fuses and you pray nothing else !

WORD OF WARNING TO OTHERS READING THIS:-

a} Batteries should be removed from the bike for charging

b} the top up corks should be removed

c} fluid levels checked ON EVERY cell

d} put to charge if fluid levels OK

Never do it on the bike because the fumes from charging can attack any exposed metals and will continue to do so for the rest of the bikes short life (unless you wash all exposed area to neutraliser fluids!!)

C
Take it to an automotive / bikers workshop and get it emptied and re-filled with electrolyte NOT just water !!!!!
Let it stand for 24 hours then charge it OFF the bike

If no fuses are blown NOT visually inspected but checked by a meter on the Ohms scale then put your battery back in and see if the bike will tumble.

If not we may be looking for some other burn associated with the charger burning not only the battery ...............
which I pray is not the case or you may need someone with you for diong the logical checks as doing electrics is tedious as it requires extreme patience and a sense of logic and a note book & pencil as it is very easy as the guys here will attest to go round in circles.

Did you use a motorcycle battery charger? and not a car battery charger. A car charger is far to heavy (to many amps) for a motorcycle battery.

If it was the latter that battery is toast, and needs replacing.

Also trying to start the bike with a charger/starter without a battery connected can fry the VR!!! if it does start then Id say you've just killed the VR. never attempt to start the bike without a battery connected.

Welcome to FZR's. As George said, these bikes (regardless of displacement it seems) are finicky, picky, down right nutso about the battery having a good charge or being fresh.

Wherever you get the battery from.

A store will fill it with acid prior to handing it over the counter.
eBay, or mail order. The battery will come with an acid pack, take care when you fill it, and do not over fill.

Lead acid batteries are stored dry, when filled with acid they are only @ 80% charge. Through it on the bike as is, and you will reduce the efficiency and life of the battery.

Correct installation is to charge a new battery @ a max 10% of its rating for 4-5 hours, or until it is fully charged.

I.E. the FZR battery is rated @ 12Ah so should be charged @ a maximum of 1.2 Amps. Anything above 1.2 Amps is considered a boost charge and will heat up the battery very quick.

When a battery overheats, each of the 6 cells have positive and negative plates, they can buckle under the excessive heat and short out permanently. Causing constant gassing and a drop in electrolyte level, not to mention the loss of paint on the surrounding area. A battery in this state is unable to take a charge, and can cause the VR to overload and fail, horror stories will occur.

I made the same mistake of using a 5 Amp car battery charger to charge a motorcycle battery in the 1980s, that battery was toast.

The VR or Voltage Rectifier/Regulator performs 2 tasks.

1. The Rectifier converts the stators AC output via a 3 diode pack to DC. DC voltage is required to charge a battery, AC will not charge a battery.

2. The Regulator controls the Voltage output to a suitable range needed to charge but not overcharge the battery. Approx 13.5-14.5 volts. Any excessive voltage is leaked to ground. If the battery cannot take the 13.5-14.5 volt output, undue load is placed on the Regulator which will fail.

Charge your battery with a car charger @ your peril.

If the bike starts check the charging voltage @ 3000 rpm anything in excess of 14.9 volts will damage other electrical components, aswell as your new battery. Better still have a voltmeter connected to the battery before you attempt to start the bike, if and when the bike starts. If the voltmeter reads above 14.9 volts kill the engine immediately!! and replace the VR.

You have stated you tried to start the bike with the battery disconnected, which can damage the VR, usually the leak off to ground gets fried = far to much Voltage output. Using your charger/starter without a battery connected could also damage the charger, it could have a overload protection which would account for the no start.

Good luck.
