Modding my 600

Post by Kaje »

well, just getting my first bike this year, i want to get as much riding in as possible, but when the winter comes, i want to totally change up the bike.

1) change front fairing. - regarding this, does anyone have any suggested fairings that will fit with out a weeks worth of work/look sexy?

2) change exhaust

3) possibly change tail out and hopefully tail lights into something a little nicer

4) custom paint job/new decals.

does anyone have any suggestion? i'm new to all of this stuff, so i really need some help. =]

Kaje,
It really depends on what you have around you.If you have friends with welders and a modest set of hand tools then the tail swap is do-able at very little cost.
If you go and become a pest at the local paint spray shop and beg them to teach you to spray paint you can blag a virtually free paint job inside about 3 months or so.
If you are artistic then you could buy a cheap airbrush rig and do your own murals on tanks etc (or as I do the stripe work on the bikes.
as i said it is what is near to you that you can get involved in I blagged my way into a sheet metal production shop and within 6 months i was making parts for the bike & getting the stuff welded for beers until I learned the rigs controls and welded up my own stuff when the rig was idle on lunch times and saturdays ( used to sweep up the shop early o'clock and then use any machine I liked afterwards. If I needed guidance I would ask the operator teach me to set the machine for a case of beer or something else he wanted)

Luckily for me, my father has welding equipment, and spray guns ect. he has a lot of experience, especially with welding. i dont know where to find these parts somewhat cheap though. fairings are expensive! and as far as the front fairing, any ideas for something not to hard?

1 - get the complete set fairings you want (craigslist/ebay/bike yards)
2 - make some custom mounts
3 - buy your dad some beer and have him give you a hand and some suggestions of mounts/brackets
4 - if you have any issues with how to do the tail and tank swap there are many threads on this site about how to complete them. try the search or wiki, but i would not try to use a "sexy" or newer front fairing while keeping the side fairings stock, nothing will line up as you would think. trust me i tried, good luck with the conversion my friend.

When you do decide on what you want TAKE TIME there is no rush.
I now have a complete FZR fairing set spare and it has taken 18 months but the most expensive bit was the head fairing & birdcage shipped from the states the rest was less than 70 UKP the lot.

Yup no colour matches except the tank & the front fender ( in dark blue sparkle YUK) a couple of minor cracks (Plastex is my friend ) and all will be ready within the month to have the painter & bank manager work their magic
