Issue or no? (Newbie Question)

Hello..

I want to apologize right away for my lack of knowledge of motorcycles. I've just recently gotten my endorsement, and purchased my first bike (1998 Yamaha FZR 600r) and I had a question that is troubling me more and more as I get used to the bike.

When in first and second, and to some extent third gear (Again, I apologize sincerely if this is common motorcycle knowledge, and if my description is too general to give an answer) and I'm not really hitting the throttle heavily the bike "wains" it sounds like its cutting out, like it wants to die (never has), and sorta rocks back and forth. Once I give it more gas it smooths out just fine. So taking off (in a parking lot where I cant really give it a lot) or cruising in a 30mph zone it's kinda a pain, and sounds/feels funky. When I'm in a 30mph I just give it more throttle and ride the clutch a hair to keep it smooth.

I was told all fzrs are "like that", and I shouldn't be concerned. I don't know a better way to explain it, so if that isn't enough I can always take a video or record the sound.

Thanks for reading the wall of text, and hopefully everyone will just tell me I'm a newbie and I need to learn 2 ride better. (Id prefer that over expensive repairs =) )

Does it do this in 3rd gear at 30? If so then the answer is simple, you shouldn't be in 3rd at that slow of a speed. I don't go into second until I'm going to be cruising in the 30s for a while. And then keep it in 3rd until 45-50. It sounds high but if you think about it you are keeping the bike in the lower 1/3 of the rpm range. That's like keeping a car with a 6k red line in the 2's, and I guarantee that's what it will be in. BUT if the bike is doing this a lot (and to some extent it will, being fuel injected), I would recommend doing a sync of the carbs, changing the oil, flushing the radiator. You don't know when the p.o. did these last. And they will all contribute to the bike jumping a little. And the carb sync is easy. You'll find it in the wiki.

Thank you! I will monitor it on my way home tonight, and post more information. I'll monitor the gear/rpms that I am shifting at/etc. If its simply me going up a gear too early... I can live with that np.

if my bike is cold and I tried to stay at say 20 mph in any gear she will "buck" and sound as those she wants to quit. As you were told FZR's are a bit tempremental at low speeds .It could be the way you are riding 600 is a bit of a handful for a new rider I know when starting a journey and I am not paying full attention ie closing my visor listening to my pillion as I said with the bike cold even after 50 years of riding I can get the same thing so do not worry too much.


The advice on changing the oil, coolant, petrol & brake fluid, cleaning carbs is VERY SOUND advice.Most standard stuff is in the WIKI if not Hollah everyone here chips in.

Mine doesn't like parking lot speeds, warm or not. Be warned if you haven't hit it yet but wide open throttle into the power band it'll come on strong and quick. Don't be afraid of it, you'll get used to it quick enough but I recommend getting used to it in safe circumstances (not in traffic, on a curve, going towards a solid object, etc) if you plan on using it. Make sure to wear your gear, swear is better than blood and everyone has a book the recommend and for me it's "Total Control" by Lee Parks. It's saved me a few times

You need a little more throttle. After some time with it, you'll get a good feel for the correct amount of throttle / clutch to remain. buck free. Also, check your chain tension. To loose can really magnify this problem.

As mentioned above, its a world of difference between how your riding now and wot above 8k. When your ready, take it somewhere safe and get accustomed to it.

Thanks for the advice guys! I kept it in 2nd for 30mph and that seemed to help tremendously. I stayed at a consistant 4k rpms and even though it was louder it was far smoother!!

Yeah you kind of have to just get over the noise. Freeway speed (70ish mph) you'll be cruising at 7k+ rpm's, and it'll be loud, but its not hard on the bike at all. Hell on my ninja 250 i do hour, hour and a half drives at 9k, 10k rpm. The bike can handle it even if it seems loud. If it helps, wear some earplugs

You should be wearing earplugs even with the best of Helmets anyway, wind noise is NOT good for the ears
I know after 50 years of riding and 21 years od gun fire my ears are not in too good a shape

Yup - every time I get my ears checked, I pass with flying colours. I can hear faint pure tones while sitting in a dim, soundproofed box with the best of them.

Try and talk to me in a noisy room, and forget it (or try and talk to me over an AFV IC headset...)
