BUT being an engineer I decided to try it out on my street drag racer

I checked the wheels and they could take the same size oputer diam bearings BUT with 25mm inside instead of 15 mm (?) memory is iffy on that figure but it was way thin. I made the axle from a 1" construction bolt 14" long and turned & ground to suit the new bearings. I bored the stantions to take the new diam fitted it up on the saturday morning. Told my riding buddy I was gonna take it out for a trial.

The max on the bike was about 80 mph thro those sweepers and you had better be good to do that.
After the modified front axle I got that top speed up to 120 + mph
without a wobble , twitch or any other oddity.

I then told my buddy to ride the bike, that alone signified that something was definitely odd, you could probably ask my wife for sex and get a better odds than asking to ride any of my bikes.
He went out and I swear he had trouble getting his helmet off afterwards due to that stupid grin.

He decide then and there that hid bike had better have one and bought the bearings then at the store and by Sunday we both had fat axles.
Neither of us have ever had skinny axles since.

The FZR I have not done YET due to the fact that I want the suspension done first because no amount of axle will stop those dead springs from diving, and wriggling under braking.

Lasse,
Will do my last bits of YSS PD Valves (Cartridge emulators ) have arrived from Australia today (1 week to get here !!!!) ClapHands ClapHands
Over the next few days (probably start monday to give the wife enough room not to moan ) I will be tearing the front end of the bike off and setting up the suspension. canofworms

I will dig the wheel bearing sizes out as they are now and give my mate at the bearing company a call to see what we can use that is bigger. (usually 2 alternate sizes) the fork legs will be the deciding factor as to max axle size.
WOOT
Pictures of the tear down and tooling i make for the forks etc will appear on my web site starting at :-

http://www.saltmine.org.uk/fzr/fzr.html

You will have to find your way from there as the page for this is not even drafted yet Nerd

Lasse,
take a look at :-
http://fzronline.com/wiki/doku.php?id=i ... _emulators

OR

http://www.saltmine.org.uk/fzr/fork.html

As to beefy axle mod I would not do that until I knew my suspension was right (as you will read my original springs were some 5 mm under specification due to wear ) or recommend anyone else doing it until the shocks were set up correctly.

The research bit is written up under FZR101 then the fzr600 link.

There is one gotcha in the rear wheel mod as the sprocket carrier bearing numbering is WRONG !!, usually the YAMAHA part number is a straight read to universal part number THAT particular one is NOT !!!

However this will be remedied in the next 24 Hours as i am tearing my FZR rear wheel out & checking & re-packing grease in the swingarm/suspension needle bearings and checking the fit of a 3en braced swingarm :-}

George, that is one of the best write-ups I've read, ever. Great job. Sounds like you're very happy with the "new" fork.

Keep us posted on your further axle research.

Lasse,
You will find my details on :-
http://www.saltmine.org.uk/fzr/fork.html

The result was so good that I did not bother with the big axle mod (I am trying to keep all my mods to the point that the next owner can do a restore and not have to buy extra kit to get it as Yamaha sold it.)

Well bugger me ive looked every where, and i find the answer on a fork mod page
:jawdrop:

Yep i now know what paint i need for my engine covers

"That undercoat was rubbed down to a perfect finish and i then sprayed it with "Rover Gunmetal" car paint which it turned out to be a darker silver than the Yamaha version of Silver on the bike. I must admit that if I had not JUST changed the oil I would have been tempted to do the Peanut cover and the Clutch cover to match and had a rather tasty two tone silver bike. But alas I was not about to do that so I went out and bought the "Peugeot Aluminium" car paint which is as close as Dammit to the Yamaha Version "
