Very strange timing issue. Please help me figure this out.

Post by Shocka311 »

So I adjusted my valve clearance a while ago and didn't have the pads for the last cylinder and decided to save the project for the winter. Well it's the winter now and I began the project tonight. My problem came when trying to line up the timing mark when #1 is at TDC of compression stroke. The timing mark will not ever line up when 1 should be at TDC on compression. It did last time I adjusted valve clearance, not this time though. I set the cam lobes apart and took the spark plug out of cylinder 1 and set something on the piston to see if the cylinder was at TCD at all cause I thought maybe it was something with my timing chain. Nope. It was indeed at TDC. I turned the crankshaft with a long thin screwdriver sitting on the piston and the timing mark NEVER lined up when the piston was at TDC on compression or exhaust stroke. WTF!!! I am confused. Anybody have any idea what the hell is going on. I don't want to take the timing chain off till I figure it out because right now i know that the cams are still correct. if I take the timing chain off I won't be able to find TDC on compression cause the damn timing mark is somehow off.

AH HA! The damn picture in my manual is upsidedown so it makes it apear that the mark is on the rear of the crankcase. there is a mark there too so I was tryin to line it up with that. Looked a bit closer and it is lined up perfect. I'm happy.

I had this problem a long time ago once.
once the "T" mark on the flywheel is centered on the mark , if you line the cam sprocket mark up perfectly on the camshaft cap , then put in the chain tensioner, and then rotate the engine a couple times, it is usually off the timing mark on the cam sprocket.

If i remember right i had to set the sprocket mark just ahead of the mark on the camshaft cap, rotate the engine one or two revolutions and then it was spot-on, i may have set the sprocket behind the cam cap mark ,it's been too long to remember, but i'm pretty sure it's ahead the mark.

It has to do with the cam chain tensioner rolling the camshafts backwards, once the chain tension has been tightened by the ratcheting chain tensioner.

Now had you checked our WIKI you would have found that this is documented MIS_PRINT

Wish I would have. It certainly would have saved me alot of stress and hard thinking. I was rackin my brain tryin to figure out how the hell the crankshaft could have POSSIBLY turned independant of the piston. I finely decided it just was not possible and looked at the picture a bit closer.
