Bike title woes :(

WOW I feel very discouraged and ripped off my oney.. I only spent 1000 but still... 1 grand doesnt come easy now adays..


I have the title to the bike, the original owner signed it to someone else, that someone else turned around and sold it to a person... this person sold it to me..

Now the tax office tells me I need to go to a hearing with as many documents as I can take, which I only have the title signed off june 2009. I dont know what to do...

Should I scrap it? Part it out? Get another frame? Any tips please? I hear you can just swap motor and tranny to a shell? kinda like a car?

Strip everything off the frame soon as, so if you lose they don't take the lot.

They are not coming to get me, they said I can schedule a hearing if I want to. I think its probably easier to swap out the frame as someone here is selling one. It would come out around 500 dllrs to get that other frame to my door. Unless the original owner gets to me withion the next 2 weeks or so.

600 frames are cheap. You should be able to get one off of eBay for $300 or less. And swapping everything to a new frame can be done in less than a day. I would look at what it will cost you to have a hearing vs. buying a new frame. Plus look into weather or not they will notify the previous owners. If they don't notify the previous owners, then you should win by default because no one else will so up. But the court fees may be too high to justify it.

Who told you to have a hearing? Title problems very state to state. I'd make sure what you need to do through the DMV.

Cheapest way is to just get a bonded title from your insurance company. On average it will run about 100. It basically proves you own the bike. As far as selling it after that, I'm not sure how that works out, but if you are planning on keeping the bike for awhile the bonded title is the cheapest option.

In IL, for the situation you are in, they have a form that needs to be signed by the two people on the title agreeing that it was sold to you so they can assign it to you. You can get the form at the DMV. Not sure if it's the same in TX. Otherwise talk with the secretarty of state police office. Again, in IL, I can bring them a lost title frame and if the VIN run cleans they will issue a new title for the bike. You pay an inspection fee and titling fee but you leave them with the paperwork.

So look into a few of those options. Otherwise, yes, you can find just a titled frame and swap everything over.

My friend is going through a similar situation with a bike he bought from a guy that ended up not having it paid off or registered to HI, it is still registered to him in the other state, my friend has the bike, the guy got the money and now he's thinking of parting it out.

if you need a frame I have an extra one, it's at my parents house in south Alabama, but I have the title here in Hawaii. I can have my dad ship it to you while I mail the title. It's legit, I can take a picture of the title for you, I'll let it go for $300 shipped, and I can take a picture of the title for you. The whole bike is already disassembled so it's as simple as putting the frame in a box and shipping it, and I don't see shipping from AL to TX taking very long. Let me know.

That is what my question was leading up to. If you choose to go this route be sure to call the police over the phone and ask them to run the vin. Just tell them you are thinking of buying this bike and your having them run the vin before you hand over any cash. I learned the hard way on this, trust me. Since then, I have always had the vin run over the telephone. Bonding a title is easy and like TK said, it will run you between $100-$125.

That sounds like the most sensible & cheapest option to me.

I went to the original owner's home today. He semmed like a cool guyt and even let me keep the title. I told him ill give him 100 bux if he goes and requests a copy of the title at dmv, he nwill do so and sign it off to me apprpiatelly. Hes going to sign it for 1000 dllrs, plus just in case imma get a bill of sale from him. I should be riding in a month or two. I also found another fzr 600, the dual lamp one for 1200 so imma get that too for my dad(since i think hes gonna do a few low speed drops in it)

That is what I was going to suggest. Except I would have gotten the bill of sale from him BEFORE he went to the DMV. That way, he can't claim the bike is stolen or whatever and get it taken away from you and given back to him.

He cant claim it stolen as he signed off the title to someone else , so theres proof he sold it.

Technically true, and would help in court, but title was never transferred therefore the legal title owner remains the seller.

However, this thread would be admissable in court for a timeline of your dealings with the guy, so if he tried to pull something you could slap him pretty good.
