FZR 600 Q and A

Post by jowek70 »

Hey guys,
I just joined the forum today.
In a few days I will be purchasing a 1993 Yamaha FZR 600.
Its all black, with no fairings.
I plan on putting all the plastic back on and doing a few other small things.
But how swappable are parts for this bike with other Yamahas?
What year was this model made from, i know in cars they have generations like 1987 to 1994.
Any information is helpful.

The bike existed mostly unchanged from 1989 to 1999. The swingarm was widened for 1990 (stock rear tire went from 130/18 to 140/18) along with 4 piston calipers being added up front. A few external engine part design and electrical upgrades were done as well (if I recall). 91 & 92 saw the change from a twin headlight setup to a single. They reverted back to the twin headlight setup in 93 and the bike remained that way through the rest of it's life span with little more than just color scheme changes. 95 saw a few more electrical upgrades (mainly going to a better Rectifier/Regulator) but that's it. That's just the jist of it. Someone else will elaborate on where I may have left things out.

If you can think of it, it can be done. With one exception, the YZF600 is the only engine swap that is do able. R6 & R1 engines will split the frame on the first run down the road.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

Welcome to the site, wise choice in bikes I might add BUT please if you want specific help PLEASE add your location to your profile as it helps us with market differences in models & where to send you for bit when required.

It also helps the whole group organise ride out gatherings and in at least one instance finding some one so close as to help put a hand to the bike .

ENJOY

MCN recently dyno tested the 2010 R6 at only 109BHP, and the 2005 model at 99.9 BHP (they did a group test of every R6 variant from 99 to date), though some chumps have claimed as much as 135BHP for their standard bikes, so that's rather an exageration. I think an extra 18 BHP is no more likely to snap the frame than my extra 60lbs weight over the average rider, plus steel is more ductile and alloy anyway. It is, however, a pointnless exercise - why take a relatively flexible FZR unit and replace it with a midrange gutless R6 motor, unless you're a track monkey? The uber high revving R6 motor is best left where it is - in the well suited race geometry R6 frame.

Thanks for the links and advice.
I'm from michigan by the way.
I found a local dealer, where I may need to have some work done at.
But I'm a great car mechanic so I'm very able to do most of minor fixes myself.
There is one thing about the bike, that is it needs carb work.
How hard is this to do? Should I just take it to the dealer for carb/engine work?
Details on the bike:
1993 FZR 600
9,xxx miles
Needs a tune up
Needs a new battery
Needs carb work, like i said
Hasn't been ridden in almost a decade
Is there anything particular I should check for? I looked through the buying guide for the 600's on here, but I just wanted to be sure.
Thanks again.

Prior to me owning it my bike sat for roughly 4 years. Upon bringing it home and doing some inspection, this was due to a dead ignition coil-which resulted in one of the carbs seizing from it sitting so long. Carb cleaning is easy. It's a matter of getting any dirt and old varnished gas off and all the jets cleared. I'd replace any o-rings and float bowl seals in the carbs that need it. In addition to a compression check I would maybe do the following:
Clean the inside of the tank as best as you can
Replace the plugs
New fuel filter
Fresh battery
Fresh oil and filter
Clean and rebuild the carbs
Of course, fresh gas

If all the stars are aligned and you were a good boy for Santa it should fire up

Thanks for the cleaning/inspection advice.
I will have to look into the carb thing alittle more.
I've read thru the buyer guide and wiki articles and what has been posted on here.
I'm new to crotch rockets, but i'm an avid car enthusiast and a former motocross/supercross racer.
So I know my way around bikes, but not of these engine size.
So I should be able to rebuild the carbs pretty much on my own then?
Or is synching them too difficult?

Not too hard at all. May seem that way at first but it's a snap
Click for carb help

Synching is easy too and you can make your own tool to do it.

And here is a pic of my synch tool

Nice.
I'm definitely alittle more comfy with carb work now.
I know the dealers around here charge like $200 a carb to rebuild/sync them.
Thanks for the info again.
I'll keep ya posted on what comes of this.

J,
please put your location in your profile as a point of reference for us so that we know you are a} stateside,
b} who is local to you as a rider if you need physical help,
c} who to point you at for parts
d} where to ship stuff to ( if feasible)

as you see we have quite a good reference site here with guys & gals who know their bikes.
As to engine work etc on the bike think of it as half a V8 :-}

Hey guys,
been awhile since I've posted.
but the 93 i was gonna buy fell through.
dunno what happened to the seller but he stopped responding to my calls/emails.
oh well, found another fzr that i'm investigating.
but, i had some more questions.....
its an 87 with 8k on it.
needs brakes and tires.
i don't need the best tires, so what are some cheaper recomendations?
and what about brake pads, are they different between front and rear?
any good recomendations for them?
links are appreciated.
info is great.
thanks guys.

J,
pre -90's are different to the post 90's in rear tyre width and other small niggles. the fact it has only 8 k on it is it's only redeeming feature.
