VR Questions from a Noob

Post by the_finch »

Here we go....

I got a 1997 FZR600RJ as my first bike back in March '08. Since then, it has developed the characteristic "dead spot" in the middle of the powerband and pulsing headlights at idle which typically indicates a bad voltage regulator. I did my research and understand that the 1997 has the preferrable YZF600 voltage regulator already, but I have a few questions:

1. Is a Rick's Rectifier better, worse, or equal in performance and longevity to the stock Yamaha voltage regulator? (link below)

http://www.gdlcycles.com/asp1/modetails ... =FZR%20600

2. I've heard that you typically replace the battery when you replace the voltage regulator. Does anyone reccomend any particular brand?

3. If I replace the voltage regulator and battery and it turns out to be the stator, can the VR and battery go bad again?

Any help for this noob to motorcycle maintenance would be awesome.

1 - supposedly better, rick has a solid rep from what I have heard

2 - yes, esp on these bikes as they hate crappy batteries

3 - yes

This diagram walks you through checking the charging system, should tell you if you have a stator problem.

Even the newer style VR's like you have are not bullet proof. They fail just like the less-effectively designed ones do just not as often. Check your electronics before you start throwing parts at it.
