1993 FZR --- New Rear Sprocket

Hey guys, I have a 1993 FZR 600 basically all stock except a V&H pipe on it. But I'm looking into upgrading my rear sprocket. I was thinking of getting this sprocket (Probably 53t): http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/Vor ... 00804.html

But.... I don't really want to buy a new chain also, so I'm wondering, what is the max amount of teeth for the rear that I can get using the chain that I have installed right now?

And also, when I bought the bike the guy gave me a new front sprocket, I'm not sure how many teeth it has on it... But he said it would 'make the bike faster'. Should I just try the new front sprocket and will that help me?

I just read the 520 conversion page, and learned quite a bit about sprockets... But I still need to know if I need a new chain or not... And also, how difficult is it to change the rear sprocket? (Or both sprockets and the chain for that matter) I'm not too large of a gear-head.

if your gonna change the front sprocket make sure you take the retaining nut off first before you take the chain and rear sprocket off cause the shaft will just spin without them and you wont be able to get it off. also dont have it in gear you will break the trans. i think the stock teeth on the rear is 45 teeth so you will have to get a longer chain your better off changing it all out sso it wears evenly. more teeth in the front = higher speed less torque more teeth in the rear = more torque less speed

Whenever you replace the rear sprocket its always a good idea to replace the front as well.

+10 on this. Do all three pieces together, and they will run a very long time with proper maintenance. Do one of the three, or two of the three and you will have ongoing issues that wil plague you and you'll wear everything out faster.

Better to milk some time out of what you are running while you save money for the set, and do it all, and then enjoy trouble free driveline for quite some time ahead.

Alright, I guess I'll wait and just do all 3, and could you guys suggest a decent website to buy the set from? I hear that some websites have kits, but some companies have good chains and bad sprockets, and vice versa. Also the winter is coming up fairly soon and I wasn't planning on digging into it this riding season anyway, thanks for the input guys.

I did a 520 conversion 14 front /49 rear and it was a nice kick in the pants! It gives the FZR a little more take off speed to keep up with more modern bikes. Course, it will slightly affect your mileage.

Easy if you use the clip. If you use the rivet link, then you'll need a rivet press. However, the rivet is a lot safer. Those clips have been known to fly off the chain. I never had an issue with them and actually preferred the clip, but now that I mainly do Track Days - the rivet was used this time around.

Rivet link is not an option if you race here in the UK it is mandatory.
Clip links are easier for doing maintenance or storing up the bike for winter (leaving the chain in an oil bath )
The only mis-haps I have seen with clips is people doing one of two things (or both)

A} using a chain that is not capable of handling the power ie over 90+ HP thro a 520 chain

B} placing the open end of the clip facing the front of the bike (allowing any snag to force the clip off the chain while it rotates )

Having had a chain get away whilst racing I can tell you it is EXTREMELY dangerous, the flailing end cut thro my leather jacket like a razor blade luckily it was billowed out with air so the chain never actually touched me and I would hate to think what the injury would have been like.

I know of a rider who had his ankle cut thro except for the last inch of flesh & had the foot sewn back on and limps now in cold weather due to poor chain maintenance
