tripple tree removal?

how do you take off the tripple tree upper and lower? i got the top nut off by the ignition but what is next? do i need a special tool? thanks far any help?

you need to pull the handlebars and loosen the top part of the triple tree, there are nut on either side holding the top part of the triple tree onto the forks. support the rest of the bike. take a wrench with a towel and carefully remove the double locking nut. There will be a metal ring connecting the two nuts making it impossible for them to rotate independently or the other nut. you remove the top nut first and then the second nut. when you loosen the second nut the forks will be loose so you need to make sure they don't slide out and slam on the floor.

there are no special tools required.

the bike is up on stands now and forks are already off. i was trying to slide new forks in but it wasnt lining up right so i think the lower part of the tree is bent. thanks for the help!

it's gonna be much easier to putt off the two parts of the tree and put them on the forks them put the whole assembly on the frame. If you have something you are sure is straight check to see if they forks are really bent. However, anything non-obvious will be discovered while riding. That is really the only true way I have been able to check that forks are straight. are you working on anything specific on the bike or just general dis assembly and maintenance?

there's a sequence that should be followed to line up the tubes and the trees...

basically you get the legs thru the lower far enough to protrude past the crown before dropping the crown on...then put the crown on and tighten the center nut...and then back that off a half turn or so...tighten the lower tree /fork leg pinch bolts semi tight. Install the front wheel and axle and brake calipers with axle barely tight.

Bounce the front end up and down...verify both legs are the same height above the crown and tighten the axle securely.

Install fender/fork brace with nuts finger tight..bounce front end..tighten fender/brace bolts securely.

Bounce front end...tighten lower tree pinch bolts securely.

bounce front end..tight crown pinch bolts securely.

tighten crown center nut securely.

all the bouncing and working from the bottom up will draw everthing into line

I would pull the micro-fiche on the forks so that you will know the order in which to put it al back together. Good luck!
