I was given a 89 FZR600. It needs quite a bit of work. The only thing that seems to work well is the motor. I found this killer deal on a great condition 97 FZR600 with a blow'd up engine. Will my 89 engine swap over to the 97 frame? Would there be any Ecu or electrical issues? Thanks for any help.

Re: Engine Compatibility
Welcome to the site. As far as the engine itself, yes. I don't recall it ever being changed. There are some differences between the 89 and 97, but the newer is much more improved. Check out our WiKi for more info.

Re: Engine Compatibility
The engine is a straight swap. Don't change anything else as all of the wire connections are the same between the years for the engine. I would swap the engine and rebuild the newer one to use when the '89 finally gives out.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

Re: Engine Compatibility
First off, welcome to the forum; we're glad to have you.
Post pics of the bike in question when you can. We love pics around here.
Also, where are you located? The reason I ask is that the US model FZR600's were mostly unchanged from 89-99, and so most parts swap right out, with a couple of minor exceptions. However, in Europe (and Australia and New Zealand as well, I believe) what we know as the FZR600 was discontinued in 1993 and evolved into the FZR600R, known as the YZF600 in the U.S. Nerd

Re: Engine Compatibility
I live in California. The bike isn't much to look at but ask and ye shall receive. FYI: The bike was free. So i couldn't complain about the condition when I got it. A free bike is a beautiful bike!

Another side question. Are the engine blocks the same? If so I might just swap out the 97 heads, internals, etc. onto the 89 block. Thanks for the help.

Re: Engine Compatibility
I'm down in So Cal myself. Where abouts are you? Yeah they pretty much never changed the engine through it's life here in the US (other than going to a spin on type oil filter from the canister type in 1991 I think). There are special models (known as EXUPs) that were done for California and they had an air injection/recirculation system that was mounted up front surrounding the oil filter. From your pics it looks like your bike has at least the lower engine rails from an EXUP model (see the big brackets welded at the bottom?). Another way to check if your bike is an EXUP is to check your header for a rotating valve OR look at the block up behind where the headers bolt up to the engine and you either see nothing or you see 3/8 holes. You can just plug them. Ok enough of my rambles...Steinlager wrote:I live in California. The bike isn't much to look at but ask and ye shall receive. FYI: The bike was free. Hollywood & Lancaster. I spend most of my time up in Lancaster though. It's where I keep my bike.Steinlager wrote:
