How does it work??

I pulled off the front sprocket cover today and i found that the clutch cable is attached to a mechanism on the sprocket cover.



And it is just touching the metal rod that comes out form the transmission area
So my question is, how does pulling the clutch lever in enable you to disengage the clutch and therefore change gears? If these two pieces are just touching each other how does it move the clutch frok inside the transmission?

All that mechanism does is translate the cable being pulled into a pushing motion.

The pushrod ( " the metal rod that comes out form the transmission area" )crosses through the transmission mainshaft and through the center of the clutch basket where it pushes the pressure plate against the springs-unloading the pack of clutch plates and letting the engine freewheel.

The gears are changed by rotating a 'shift drum' attached to your shift pedal.. The shift forks are moved by the shift drum and they in turn, move gears side to side.

I think that all dreman wants to know, is how this litlle mecanism on the engine sprocket cover, can turn this vertical movement (of the clutch cable) to a horizontal movement (on the clutch shaft).
That's because this mechanism on the sprocket cover has a cam inside. So when you push your clutch lever, you actually turn the cam, which in turn, pushes that litlle ball on the centre, and the ball pushes the clutch shaft. And of course the shaft presses the clutch pressure plate, forcing against the clutch springs.
Try to press the clutch lever while looking at this mechanism on the sprocket cover. You'll see what i mean. The mechanism will come towards to you, each time you'll press the lever.

I took mine completly apart to find out how it worked...

I pull the clutch lever in to see what happened with the little gig...

it kinda like a screw, when you unscrew a screw, it moves out....just pretend the cable is turn thing screw out and its pushing on the pushrod to disengage the plates....or whatever

nice explanation (I would not expect less :} As to why a ball because a} it is a hardened steel and it revolves ever so slightly since the clutch rod actually spins once it is forced against the spring pressure plate of the clutch until it dis-engages from the clutch basket driving force.

B} a ball presents a VERY small surface area to reduce friction on clutch take up ( which is why the ball must be so hard, think of a 8St woman in high stilleto heels ( now boys control yourselves ) punching dents in a wood floor due to her tiny weight being multiplied by the tiny area of heel thus upping the pressure on that tiny area

While you have that cover off go ahead and clean it up before you put it back on. Get all that gunk out of there.
