choosing sprocket size, need a litte help

Post by deathcomesarippin »

hey everybody its me again, just a noob with more questions :headscratch:

but I am looking for a new rear sprocket, one with less teeth for better acceleration and for pulling the front wheel up easier. so my question is how small is to small? I know the stock size on my fizzer(1995) is 45 teeth I was thinking about going down to a 42 or 40 is that to much does anybody have a suggestion or what has worked for you?

thanks in advance

You want a bigger rear sprocket if you want quicker acceleration. Alot of people run a 14 front and a 47 rear which is pretty close to running the stock 15 front with a 50 rear.
fzr660/400: fzr400 3en1 frame, 3en2 swinger, custom single seat subframe, fzr660 motor conversion, APE adjustable cam gears, full D&D 4-2-1 exhaust, falicon clutch basket, ignitech ignition, R6 front end with tz250 wheel, ohlins shock, storz steering damper, tzr250 rear wheel.

weighs 166kg wet (25kg lighter than my stock fzr600).

I explained gearing in one of my threads after I was confused about it...
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2125
I have 15/47 gearing with the 520 conversion and I can get the front up pretty good...I can even get the front up about 6 inches in second gear.
Ask Dru86, I think he has a 47T sprocket he can sell you.

Dru,
I thought the stock for the 600 was 15 /45 as the final drive gearing ?

I created a spreadsheet that shows some gearing calculations with estimated top speeds. I went with a 14/49 on my FZR and it was perfect!

Keep in mind that if you are extremely weight concious you want to got with the smallest sprocket combo possible for the gearing you want (less weight per sprocket...shorter chain)

But, the converse of that is true if you want maximum chain/sprocket life. Go with the largest front/rear that gets the ratio you like. (load spread over more chain links/sprocket teeth)

also: Small front sprockets accelerate wear on chains-the tight wrap is hard on chains.(more link/pivot angle)

In the realm of chain life, I went with a 15/50 sprocket setup with a 520vm DID gold x-ring chain. After the first 300 mile break-in, I haven't had to readjust the chain but maybe once in the last 1000 miles (yes, I do check it every 2-300 miles). The conversion gave me alot of "seat of the pants" acceleration, but while I haven't gotten the front wheel up yet, I honestly haven't tried.

Damn, that's a hardcore GIF. I'd say he was sore the next day, if he lived through that. I guess it all depends on speed, but no matter how fast your going, taking a faceplant into an SUV can't be fun.

This gear ratio spread sheet is for FZR's with the 18 inch rim though. You can not use these figures if you are running a different swingarm like my R6 or some have the TZR or gixxer. You would have to re-calculate for the 17 inch rim but would be pretty close. Give or take a few MPH.

just remember thought that with differnt/ bigger sprockets come lower high speed/top speed and higher rpms which = more gas consumption .. so really figure out if your lookin to pop wheelies , and do you do alot of highway driving because then you might want somthing alil more perkier but not as much powerful. i first went 15-45 when i was a Noob .. hell im still a Noob LMAO .. but really i didnt see that incredible differnce from 15-45 to 14-47 that i thought i was gonna get .. or maybe its just that i gained 20 lbs so the wieght is making it feel the same ..lolol but you will love to see your bike lifting in the air just off of throttle .
a member here that goes by name of v8killas , had a so called bored out fzr600 bored to 750 , which i doubt it was because he was running stock gearing and im running 14-47 and i prob outwieghed him by 60-70 lbs but when we went all out balls to the walls from 1st rolling at about 20 WOT i would keep up with him almost thru all the gears till i think the weight advantage for him kicked in .He shoulda smoked me given wieght and motor ratios' and MIKE94fzr .. you wer witness .. so he or no1 cant call BS ..lol

you can get the whole setup for about 150 bucks unless you source the parts seperately .
