Pods, A question and possible solution????
OK, I got the Dual K&N Pods for my FZR, I know what all the post's say, but I am one to try something myself. I thought "it cant be as bad as they say". The only reason I wanted them was the modified (Hacked to SH@T  ) air box that is a PIA to reinstall.
Well, I'm gonna say it was UGLY. I have 120 mains and a V&H full exhaust, I assume I was set up to handle it. I was wrong, when I hit 7'500 RPM's it broke up and sputtered badly. I tried an experiment and taped (black electrical tape) the lower 2/3 of the pod(s). It seemed to run strong across all the RPM's and I have an easy to remove filter setup!
Any input on this would be appreciated, if there is any down side to this?
Thanks

you might need either a stage 2 or 3 jet kit, then sync your carbs.

I highly recommend putting the stock airbox back on, but if you're going to keep the pods, tehn you're looking at larger jets.
I also advise that you look into getting a Flo-Commander for the bike if you're sticking with the pods.

Oh come on..give the pods a chance. You can't expect everything to be perfect without a little work, do ya?

Is there anyone here who has used pods and built a true rammed air box setup?
where are guys routing their bowl vents when they pod 'em?

Re: Pods, A question and possible solution????
I think FasterThanUr did something with ram air, but he was using YZF600 carbs which are set-up to handle forced air.
The stock FZR carbs are not set-up to handle true ram air since they are not able to equalize the pressure in the stock form.
The link you provided shows the "outside of the bike air filter" which does allow for fresh air and I'm all for colder air coming in. It does not; however, provide ram air. It may actually provide inadequate air to the carbs. If anything it may starve the cylinder furthest away from the filter.

Re: Pods, A question and possible solution????
The bowls just need to be vented to be equalized with airbox pressure( instead of atmospheric) so there is still a viable vacuum signal at the needle jet.ragedigital wrote:I think FasterThanUr did something with ram air, but he was using YZF600 carbs which are set-up to handle forced air.

I'm thinking about fabbing an entire 'floor type' airbox to bolt down under the intake manifolds, so the entire carb would be at airbox pressure. Mount the carbs and pods andthen seal downa lid. That's how they do carbureted blow thru forced induction (turbo/superchargers). Gets more 'box volume and would be much easier to tie into the ram tubes.

Re: Pods, A question and possible solution????
I'm still right in the middle of two conversions..one R6 tail/tank conversion, and one cold air/individual air filter intake conversion..i have to enlarge the holes in my frame for cooler air through custom intake tubes that lead to the airbox below..that is on the way..still a work in progress, i just need time to cut the holes in my frame and weld the exhaust pipe pieces into it so I can slide a tube through it into the airbox.reelrazor wrote:Is there anyone here who has used pods and built a true rammed air box setup?
