99 - 02, 03 - 05 R6 tail conversion questions

Post by match417 »

Stuff bought so far...05 R6 seats and tail, about to buy 04 YZF600 tank/cap/brackets once mine and the guy's schedules align..

Ok, i'm a fabricator, so i'm not asking for everyone's metallurgy advice..i hope i'm not coming across as rude, i just like to figure stuff out myself..that's all, i do have a few questions though before i go and buy more stuff that i may or may not have to sell on ebay because it doesn't fit...so here's my ?'s..

1a) I noticed my 05 R6 front seat doesn't fit the YZF600 tank (i tried it on my friends 05 YZF600 with his seat off), is there anything I can do about this with the parts I have?

1b) Are there tiny differences in the design of the seat-border section of the YZF600 tanks?

2a) does the 99 - 02 R6 seat fit the YZF600 tank snugly?

2b) can I use the 99 - 02 R6 seat on my 05 R6 tail with the YZF600 tank? Does the seat fit nicely on the tail?

3) Am I able to put a girl on back comfortably with her feet lining up with the foot pegs and her not being too far away from me?

4) what was done about the reservoir? Make one from a bottle?

5) if i'm running individual air filters will the tank clear the air filters?

6) does my FZR petcock bolt into the YZF600 tank for a reserve switch? Or do I lose the advantage of the reserve switch in doing the conversion?

7) is there any way to integrate my 05 LED brake lights with my turn signals?

8) i removed the rear piece of my headlight fairing bracket because i didn't like it, the place it's bolted to the frame underneath the tank cover looks very similar to the place the bracket for the YZF600 tank is mounted. Can I just bolt the YZF600 bracket in there or do I have to make something?

9) anyone want to buy my jetted, cleaned carbs with individual air filters? I'm upgrading carbs too, I have a youtube video of it running about a month ago if anyone's interested.

I'm aware that people are using 99 - 02 tails on FZR's with the YZF600 tank and the front seat seems to match up with the tank fine, I'm very close to just buying a 99 - 02 front seat, because I think it might fit, and just putting it on the 05 R6 tail, then selling the R6 front seat.

Ill help you on one of them.

The seat can be unwrapped and cut and then re-stapled. But then, your a fabricator and already knew that one.

#5 - I'm running pods with a YZF tank and no clearance issues. I don't think the individual filters are any larger, but ????

#6 - You loose the reserve switch. I don't think the petcocks are interchangeable.

#7 - Naesles had a way to do this, but I don't remeber it and his website has been down for 2+ months.

#8 - The tank bracket need to be bent and the holes elongated or yu need to make a bracket that mounts to the frame and allows the tank to bolt to that.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

I'll have to look at it again when I actually get a tank, all i remember is it didn't seem like it fit right on the tank when I put it on my friends YZF, the curves on the front left and right seemed too narrow to match where the curves on the tank fit the stock YZF seat and the seat might need to be spread out a bit. But it might sit differently once I put the tank on the bike. I do have a 2000 r6 tank from wrecked bike..I could probably fiberglass over it to make it look wider where it would match the curve of the FZR frame. Hmm..i just thought about doing that too..and I just might do it. FZR with an R6 tank..i'll update you guy on how that goes.

i'm so excited now..i don't have to buy the yzf600 tank for $200 to do my conversion..I can just put the 2000 R6 tank on the bike, the curve on the front of it matches the frame, there is a huge gap (pictured) that I will have to fiberglass over and reshape the back of the tank, but it can be done. the seat fits the tank, it (tank) just needs to be supported in the back..the sad thing is i should have thought about this 2 weeks ago..it would done already and I would be riding the bike around. I've had this tank forever, didn't think I could actually use it on the FZR..

as you asked...more pics! in the daylight this time. In the second pic you can see the gap on the rear side of the tank really well. I might just leave it like this. I definitely want to fix the dents in the tank, in the first pic you can see one of the major dents really well, it's the right front side of it.
