Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
the transmissions in these things are very weak . i don't shift without the clutch just to go easier on the gears , and even then i still clunk into second fairly often .
Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
That's something I've been wondering about. I know Yammys have clunky transmissions, but mine clunks really hard going from 2nd to 1st on a fairly regular basis. I've also (not recently) gone to 1st only to get no downshift and a banging metal sound that I can feel in the shift lever. Are either of these things I should be concerned with, or is it just more FZR quirkiness?Dr Rockso wrote:the transmissions in these things are very weak . i don't shift without the clutch just to go easier on the gears , and even then i still clunk into second fairly often .
Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
well mine has a shift kit so it's a little better than it was stock , but i find if i don't shift quickly at about 7k or more in first i'll get a klunk going into second . most of the time i can hit it just after 7k and slip in quietly .
and as a rule of thumb i don't downshift into first till i'm at 10mph or under , there's really no reason to anyway , but it's easier on the gears that yamaha (probably while smoking crack ) designed

Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
so i guess don't quick shift if i've got a stock transmission?

Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
well even before the shift kit i could shift without clunking . the important thing is to firmly shift , the quicker and firmer you can get your foot to shift that lever the better , and like i said ,mine likes it when i do it above 7k coming out of first . and as i said before , i don't downshift into first untill i'm at about 10mph or less . but i always use the clutch .

Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
I always use the clutch.
You could always install an air shifter.

Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
i do it when i'm really getting on it, usually about 11,000 to 12,000 rpm. In my experience when i use the clutch in a hurry, like that i sometimes miss a shift
and i've heard thats whats really hard on the transmission. Imo its a much firmer/positive shift at those rpms and in a hurry, then with a clutch, but thats just me

Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
Why are you wanting to speed shift? Driving on the street, you're not looking to shave a second off your lap time. Just make it one consistent motion. You can shift fast enough using the clutch in unison with the pedal. If you read your user manual, it will usually suggest shift speeds - going up they are in 10-15 mph increments usually(point being to reach high gear as soon as possible??). But most importantly it will state a minimum shift for 1st gear usually >20 mph.
Personally, I don't speed shift intentionally. Every now and then I may bump up a gear on accident and it usally slips right in.

Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
If i'm gonna try to make it hit hard as in running the bike , I always use the clutch ..... when i run up and down the roadway just riding around , I use my clutch while shifting from 1st to 2nd , and 3rd ..... but many times i don't use my clutch shifting to 4th , 5th , and 6th gear ...... all this at low RPM's and slow speed operation .... I don't really want to tear into my tranny ..... Racing and getting on it is lots of fun .... If your gonna play , then your gonna pay ..... i just don't have the funds at this time ...... I'm thinking bout bumping up my gears for out -of-town travel .... say like 4,000 RPM ... 70 MPH .. i wonder what a 15 front and a 40 rear would ratio out to ....... yeah i know .... should have got a cruiser ..... yeah .. but what i did was get the most bang for the buck motorcycle ..... Man @!!! that left side engine cover gets hotter then all get out .... is it glowing red ? whoa ..............
Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
Speed shifting on an FZR............. heeheehee....... sounds like an oxymoron. USE THE CLUTCH. unless you like buying new transmission.

I take off a lil throttle when I kick it up a gear and it generally goes in nice and easy

Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
well, I just had a 16 front 45 rear on my bike (I think it was 45, it was stock, whatever that is) and I ran 5500 RPM in 5th at 70 MPH. I'm sure it would've been around 4-4500 RPM in 6th, but I love the way it sounds above 5 with my two brothers exhaust!smoktt2020 wrote:If i'm gonna try to make it hit hard as in running the bike , I always use the clutch ..... when i run up and down the roadway just riding around , I use my clutch while shifting from 1st to 2nd , and 3rd ..... but many times i don't use my clutch shifting to 4th , 5th , and 6th gear ...... all this at low RPM's and slow speed operation .... Re: quick (or clutchless) shifting
Wow a 16T front , kewl ........ my FZR has been beat up pretty well before i got it , so i'm just gonna make it a HWY gas-saving ride ... Thinking bout installing 43T rear and keeping the 15T front .... i HAVE a couple of other new bikes to ride , they don't belong to me although .................... wonder what the 43T rear would be like ? ................ I don't like reving and holding 6 grand on the interstate for 2 hours just to even stay with traffic .... I think my engine side covers are glowing red ... i'm not trying to race anybody with the FZR600 .... just gonna ride ..........
