Well, I do know the stock wind screen is clear. I don't believe the Zero Gravity wind screens are DOT approved, but it shouldn't matter anyways because you are still required to wear either eye protection or a helmet because the wind screen (on the FZR) doesn't protect your eyes anyways.

Re: Stock windscreen color
the reason i was asking was cause i got pulled over the other day and the cop gave me a fix it ticket cause he said my windscreen wasnt legal. its a clear-red one from zero gravity. ive never had any other cop say anything about it. i did find out from zero gravity that there winscreens are not DOT approved, so not street legal. just to let anyone out there know who has a aftermarket screen if you get pulled over by a cop with a stick up his arse hes gonna get you for it.
this cop went all out on my bike. he checked engine numbers, vin numbers and asked where i had gotten all of my parts cause all my plastics are different colors. when he realized that my engine didnt match the frame he came at me like it was stolen. i think he was looking for stolen parts and NOS, when he saw the resivoir for my fox tc.

I'm sure deputy could shed more light on that subject, but it sounds like the guy was just being an ahole because he could. Where do you live? This could also have something to do with it.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

Re: Stock windscreen color
yeah, let us know where you live so we DON'T move there.
What a jerk, hardly anything is DOT except helmets and blinkers (if you're lucky) anymore.
I'm pretty sure my Lockhart Phillips speedscreen is not DOT approved either.

Re: Stock windscreen color
I doubt any of the aftermarket windscreens are DOT approved and I'd be surprised if the stock ones even are. The tinting on the windscreen shouldn't make a difference seeing as how you aren't looking through it when you're riding.
In Wisconsin, if the windshield, not windscreen, is 15" or above the handlebars you are not required to wear eye protection...hence, a windscreen doesn't have anything to do with your vision being obscured if it's tinted. The only law regulating tinting concerning motorcycles (in Wisconsin) deal with sunglasses and tinted helmet shields being worn at night.
Did the warning notice happen to have a State Statute or Ordinance Number on it by chance?

Re: Stock windscreen color
If it was me I'd take it to court if you get a ticket and let the magistrate decide your fate.
The reason I say this is due to the contradictory nature of laws and ordinances that are sometimes apparent when you look at a code section at face value. For instance, in Iowa, the 321 code restricts the operator of a motorcycle to "eye protection required." As long as you are wearing sunglasses or a face shield you should be OK. But....if you look into the language covering windshields, under under Iowa code 321.438 it states:
"A person shall not operate on the highway a motor vehicle equipped with a front windshield, a side window to the immediate right or left of the driver, or a side-wing forward of and to the left or right of the driver which is excessively dark or reflective so that it is difficult for a person outside the motor vehicle to see into the motor vehicle through the windshield, window, or sidewing. The department shall adopt rules establishing a minimum measurable standard of transparency which shall apply to violations of this subsection."
AND, goes on to state:
"Every motor vehicle except a motorcycle, or a vehicle included in the provisions of section 321.383 or section 321.115 shall be equipped with a windshield in accordance with section 321.444." (regarding safety glass)
Hmm, so which is correct? The answer is they both are. However, by doing a little digging, (found this using google) I have found that in Iowa, you are not required to have a windshield on a motorcycle that follows the rules of those on cars.
Case closed, rule in favor of the defendant. By simply using the search button on your computer, you saved yourself a couple of hundred bucks in Attorney fees.
Or....by bringing a picture of you sitting on the motorcycle into your hearing, you might be able to sway the judge (or magistrate) into using common sense, as you will have a tangible object to show the small "wind deflector" that is on your bike is just that-nothing more than something to deflect the wind. Certainly nothing anyone would use to look through, thus voiding the illegal windshield charge, as you are are proving it is not in effect a windshield as set forth by the code of Iowa (in my case) and not in violation of the appropriate code section (if it applied). By wearing proper eye protection or a helmet with eye protection, you would be OK.
I have found that a little look into the actual code section will clear up some confusion, and you can bet that is where the judge will look for a ruling. By doing your homework and being honest with the judge, you might be able to show you are not breaking the law. I'm not bagging on the cop either, as he probably looking in his compendium and mistakenly issued the citation without fully knowing the extent of the code section (if it had happened in Iowa)
I hope this helps you some, and I'd do a search for you state to find the particulars of your state's code section provisions regarding this.
Good luck.
