Ignition barrel removal

Post by The Limey »

Greetings and salutations,

I need to removed the ignition barrel from the top yoke of my 3he7 in order that I can get the yoke powder coated. It appears to be held on from below with 2 screws or pins, bit there is nothing for a screwdriver to grip.

Are they pins that require drilling out, or are the visible bits caps with the screw heads concealed underneath? The Haynes Book of Lies sheds no light on the matter.

May thanks,

Nigel.

Ok, I think I have it figured out. Looks like they're shear bolts, so i have to drill the heads off.

These are special screws, here in germany called "Abreissschrauben"...their head will crack off if you reach a special torque while mounting them and drilling them is the only way to remove them again, but in the end its just a theft-blocking thing as its not so easy to remove the ignition lock quickly with these screws mounted instead of normal screws. Just take care not to kill the threads in the yoke so you can still use normal screws to remount the lock again afterwards ;)

I got them off just fine. A bit pointless as an anti theft tool, and even the dumbest tea leaf can follow the loom back from the switch and access the connectors...

Its more for blocking the fork mechanical unless the key's in...and law (at least here in germany) states that there has to be a mechanism which prevents thieves from simply makin'a short circuit and drive away...which is a bit harder if its mechanical blocked to turn the forks and the lock isn't quickly dismountable with a wrench or a screwdriver (ok,they didn't think about getting a single hard knock to crack the lock will unlock it)...not everything given in laws was well thought before makin' the laws as obviously can be seen here again ;)
Main thing is, you get another ignition-lock / ignition barrel easily reinstalled without problems now ;)
