99 fzr600 rebuild/upgrade/project

Post by turbo787 »

Hello guys and gals. Introduced myself in the newbie section already maybe a week ago and now it's time to start on this baby. So I got this 99(title says so) from a friend of mine for $200. Someone took a fall and messed up the fairings on her so whoever was it took out the gauges, front fairing, and side fairings. The ignition switch was cut, the tank and rear seat keys where lost too. Everything else seems to be there so far. Now, the bike broke the clutch arm rod oil seal and the rod. When that happened the rod messed up the lower case a bit so the engine has to come out for me to either have a machineshop fill in that little bit that lost its roundness or just get a new lower case. Since she's giong to be opened up I will put all new gaskets, seals and bearings if I see they need to be replaced. Now, where I live (Puerto Rico) these bike are very rare so I'm thinking of leaving her all original with a custom paint job. Maybe a swingarm swap for the 17" yzf rim if tires become harder to get. Was also thinking of an r1 fairing swap, they're beautiful, but love the fzr look too. I've had a couple of gsxrs(750 & 1100) and an 87 hurricane 1000 but here everyone and their grandma has a gixxer (just got another 750 that I rebuilt for my wife) and I believe that anything over 750cc here is just too much, there are roads but this is an island of 100x35 and a 600 is plenty of fun and light for mountain roads and such. So, I will be reading a lot, and asking questions if I can't find what I'm looking for with the.search feature. Got the cpr for the fzr thread almost memorized!!! Oh yeah, she also has some aftermarket headers and a yoshi rs3 pipe, so maybe she'll have a good sound to her. Anyway, here is a pic of "Matilda". Why the name? Don't really know, just came me. All righty, any help and tips will be welcome. Ok, so it says the file is too big and won't let me attach it, any help will be welcome. I'm not too familiar with this tech stuff so please bear with me.

Sounds like a big project, good luck with it. It will be interesting to see it in progress. Try photobucket then paste link here. Or you can use free program called paint and reduce the size of photos easily that way.

Hello guys, thanks for the replies. Will talk to my wife(she's the techie with these things) to show me how to do it correctly. Was talking to a friend of mine that has a vtr1000 and a busa. His father had a 99 r1 and has the front wheel in the box with new bearings and the rear wheel too that I guess wants to sell me but from what I have read it would be impossible to get them on the yzf swinger, let alone an fzr one. It would've been nice to have them(updated look). Oh well, will keep on reading and searching and getting everything together. Saw the used plastics for the fzr and they're a little high on price considering they're broken(on ebay). Not much for the fzr from what I can see. Saw the airtech ones and they would run me about $477 w/o shipping included, yikes, so I looked at some r1 plastics from china($295) with free shipping to my door and it makes me think. Doing the r1 conversion including the headlight assembly would not even come close to the $477+ for the originals. I can fabricate brackets and such, no biggie. But let's see how everything goes, it's an option if anything. So hopefully I'll be able to post pics really soon so I'll be in touch. Ride safe guys!!!

From what I understand the plastics that come from China are not too bad. There will be some minor fitment issues but if you are handy at making brackets that should not be a problem. From what I understand is that the finish is pretty nice.

Hello buddy. Well, I'm slowly gathering my info and pieces together for when I finally start. Went to get a set of wheels I had left at a friend's house almost 2 yrs ago from a previous build. They're the enkei wheels of off a cbr 900rr. Now, I know that a 17"x5.5" rear can be fit and is being used with 180/55 tires, and this wheel, from what I have been able to find are just like the f2/f3 wheels, difference being the 900rr a 5.5" wide and the f2/3 is a 5". I know I would have to put new bearings, match them to the axle, etc, so I will be doing those things. But I will be doing a swingarm swap, from the yzf600, and instead of the.180/55 I think I'll run a 170 instead. As for the front wheel being a 16" maybe that is a plus considering that it made the 900rr have sharper steering with this wheel combo. I'm not a racer, she won't be seeing the track. So what I'm trying to accomplish is to keep her good steering ability somewhat but I have to get her on the road and work from there. Will be trying some tire/suspension setups, hopefully, along this build, to see what works best. One thing I noticed with the fzr front rotors is the way they're. They sure look as if they.might.fit the.hub on the.900rr wheel perfect but I'm sure something may have to be done, but they sure look compatible. Anyway, will keep ypu guys posted with everything I find/do. She would look good with the r1 fairing swap and these wheels, at least for me. Thanks for the comment on the Chinese plastics. Have welder and can fab up something nice for brackets. Now I will start as soon as I finish my wife's gsxr750. Waithing on front fairings, headlight and some misc stuff so I can finally paint!!!!! Any thoughts are welcomed and I know you guys want pics, but chill!!!!! My wife shown me how to do these picture thing yet.
