Pissed at NOT having to do valves??

Post by TomJ »

Having been a wrench for over 40 years now (ran away at 14 and worked as a landscaper and small engine mech, then wrenching my own bikes, almost needing heavy drink with a few Brit bikes thrown in my resume), I find when I prep to do a job, I actually want to like..., do it. Stripped the front of the bike down to nothing to get to VC, get that off, check valves and they're..., perfect. WTH? This bike has 28K on the clock (that's miles, not km's). I am absolutely sure I'm the first person to ever see inside this engine since it left Japan in 1993 (given the atrocious condition of the gasket and the buggering I did to get it off). So all the work to tear down to this point and nary a valve was out of spec. So depressing. Anyone else get that? When you go in to do a maintenance job, then find nothing's wrong? All is fine? Like you could have been doing something much more meaningful like cleaning the bathroom or vacuuming instead?

Well, it was a chance to yank the carbs and the needles are humorously egg-shaped, same with tubes. Suppose all is not lost as I can build those back up properly while there's a foot of snow outside...

I think a lot of us are like that. I must have something to fix on a regular basis or I get extremely bored.

Good to hear the bike was taken care of though.
