I picked up a 1996 750 in August and its been in my local shop (JDS Cycle, Roselle Park NJ) since early september and i have yet to get it back. I was supposed to pick it up today when i recieved a call from the shop telling me not to pick it up because its not starting now. I was then told that the carbs may have gone bad from being so old. The shop went on to tell me that over the years the passages in the carbs get eaten away by the gas causing the passages to be too large causing flooding when cold starting. Im not a mechanic but i have never heard of carbs going bad just from being old. It initally went into the shop for a EXUP issue. It was then discovered that the gas tank was 2/3 covered in rust and due to the rust the carbs are gunked up and needed to be cleaned. I had the tank repaierd and while there it was at the shop it allegedly has had the carbs cleaned, jetted, sync'd, EXUP was worked on as well as the choke mechanism (which was absurdly expensive). i would imagine that when jetting the carbs the problem of deteriorated passage ways would have been discovered. Is this something that can actually happen? for the money i have already spent at this shop i could have picked up a set of KEIHIN flatside carbs and a full Akrapovic exhaust system. Im concerned that the shop is not going to be able to get this bike running correctly and im going to be stuck with a bike thats a pos.

If anyone could shoot me out some pointers on things that i should have the shop address on the bike or any information that could help me at all i would greatly appreciate it

Yeah, I'd write a check for their current total , pick it up as is

and then cancel the check on your way to a shop that is competent.

The deterioration they may be referring to could be worn emulsion tubes which is common on these typres of carbs. Over time the holes in the tubes wear oval causing the bike to run rich. it should have been picked up during the initial strip and inspection

But, they shouldn't/won't/can't all of a sudden make a runner a non-runner.

It's my opinion that a shop that receives a runner and can't return a runner shouldn't stay in business.
