Scorpion EXO 400 (small mention of 700)

By popular demand and recommendation, I've been asked to write a little review on this helmet. I will do my best and try to generalize this in terms of my experience.

Fit:
I would say this helmet fit like the Arai Quantum-f if your head fit that. Among the Arai helmets, if I recall correctly from when I used to work at Cycle Gear, Quantum-f was best for the wider heads versus narrower fit of the other Arai models. I also have a Scorpion EXO 700, which actually fit a little better for me because it's even wider than the 400 I think (the difference though I think is minuscule). Unfortunately for my specific head shape, I cannot wear the 400 for anything more than 1 consecutive hour (hence why I got the 700).

400 in Medium: Fits very snug. But for my head, felt uncomfortable right in the upper sides where there were no padding (= 1hr maximum wear time for me).
400 in Large: Fits very snug. But I could still feel the pressure points as with the Medium.
700 in Medium: Fits snug, but still can feel the pressure points.
700 in Large: Fits slightly loose in cheeks, but the pressure point is gone, hence I can wear it beyond an hour's time. (yes I has a big head unfortunately)

Overall I think Scorpions have really nice padding. Yes, they fit REALLY snug and tight, but after the accident I got into earlier this week, I'm happy for it! (Crash opinion below.) Initially it's so tight fitting, I have trouble closing my jaw without trying to puff out my cheeks first. I would have no idea at this moment how well the fit would change after further wear. Will have to have one in good condition and worn more frequently. Apparently this padding/fit is common for the Scorpions which is good. I just kind of wish they sold extra padding for more customizable fit.

On the Road:
The last I wore this and was able to go on freeway with was earlier this week. We rode on a fairly windy night though, but the ventilation seemed pretty decent. I don't remember hearing too much of the wind even w/ most of my vents closed. O.o Later on I needed air cuz the wind went away, but the vents were good. No fogging, even during my past day rides.

"Crash" test:
So, earlier this week I managed to experience for my first time, first hand what it's like to crash and slide elegantly along the pavement (see thread here ). My head felt so comfortable against the padding inside the encasement considering what was just inches away. The only indicator for me that I was sliding on pavement was the sound of the scrape on my left cheek on the helmet itself. I don't know if this is normal for any helmet, but shoot, that's exactly what it felt like to me. If there was an impact, I didn't feel it.

Anyways, that's all I can say right now about it. :)

You give something to the "crash helmet" review that many of us can't - an actual "crash" test.

hahaha.. indeed! i had no idea really what to write in it though... that's really just what i was thinking.. i have no idea how the integrity is now for that helmet, but to be safe just say it's done..

Having owned both 700 and now a 400; I think I actually prefer the fit of the 400. As Arai mentioned, the 700 seems to be a bit wider, which led to the 700 being a little bit loose after break-in. The 400 still seems to fit snugly, although I have probably less than half the miles on it. Both are comfortable helmets, IMO.

Tommy - You would be able to provide a more complete review if you would kindly wreck...

Thanks and I look forward to your complete review... lol

We already have a crash report for the 400; but I do happen to know a certain Administrator here who just got a 700...

someone is telling me i can still use my helmet cuz it was just a scratch.. although i'm a bit skeptical, cuz know these helmets were designed to withstand ONE hit...

as soon as i can face that corner again, i will go and see if i can actually measure out the distance i flew and skidded to give ya'llz an idea.. :)

I wouldn't use it again. When I wrecked, my head never hit the pavement. It scraped a long ways, but there was no real hard impact. (my shoulder took that :) ) Right now it's in the garage and will be mounted on the wall when I get around to it.. Bought a new one. Don't ever plan on putting the old one on again.

i read an article which tested g forces transferred to the brain in helmets, that the less expensive exo 400 tested better than the exo 700. the funny thing is, an $80 helmet actually tested better than all helmets tested -- and they did test some high dollar, big name helmets. more money does not always mean better safety.

Yes yes! I agree with you on that aspect. :) More money I think just means the name brand for one thing, and additional tests they do that don't necessarily mean they're better.

one thing for owners of the Shoei rf1000, I wear an xl in mine and bought an xl exo400 and snug isn't the word in this case. Constant pressure on my forehead and the dept of the helmet left my lower jaw sticking out.

Don't know about over there but over here we now have the 'sharp' test, it goes more into practical testing of the helmet and some of the cheaper end helmets have been doing really well compared to other more expenxive too!

AraiPnai,
That person is an idiot, I have ridden for 50 years plus, 40 years when helmets were mandatory. Every racer and "sensible" rider I ever knew binned the helmet after a fall ( personally binned a Bell Moto 3 after knocking it off the wardrobe onto a tiled floor )
These helmets if laminated carbon/ fibreglass will have minute stress cracks after a drop of only 6ft ( I know that because I got a mate to scan the Bell for me years later, it was my winningest helmet )

Polycarbonate helmets the same thing applies but far worse as the crack may not be visible but will fail catastrophically on the next impact.

My rule is simple "how much is my head/brain/life worth?" a darn site more than a helmet even at todays inflated prices
