hi guys, i have a '89 GI fzr400rr and i am looking at swapping engines, wouldnt say the 400 motor is gutless, far from it, but i need more power, and more reliably, the 400 carbs just arent much good, so what i want to do is drop an entire 600 motor into mine, i know how to do it,not a prob ive even down loaded a guide, im thinking it would be better if i got an entire bike to use bits from, would this best be a pre 1990 600 engine yeah???

i know what bits i need if i dont buy bike and im guessing a cost of about 700 GBP by what i can see

What model FZR400 do you have? If you have a 1WG then I think I'm right in saying a 3HE engine will fit. If you have a 3TJ FZR400 then you need preferably a 4JH (94-96) FZR600R engine, or a Thundercat lump.

There are others here who know infinetely more than me though :notworthy:

3he motor up to 93 (for Europe and other parts of the world up to 98 for US models) should fit no problem. A 4jh or thundercat motor should fit in there as well but will take a little more effort if memory serves.

ideal, priced up what i need, will do the swap in the not so distant future soon as i can 3HE engine carbs and box, stainless headers to match up to my carbon can co box, service it, and a 46t rear sprocket front sprocket and chain to match, full service CDI units new plugs, and leads, comes in at 670GBP,

if i could get an entire bike i would, few good ones on ebay for 400-600, would make life easy for the swap with one of them

it's also possible that the 600 front would fit the 400 and i think they were better forks, but not absolutely sure if it's the 3he /3en1 that were compatible, might be worth a look! advantage of a whole bike is that you can sell the bits you don't need and recoup some of the cost! the fairing may even fit aswell!

not seen my bike have ya lol, i have stiffened springs inside my forks and its a custom paint job anyway, so wouldnt want the fairing lol

its also weird, 3en1 forks are 38mm i bought some a long while ago to try and they were to small for my triple clamp, my fork legs are 42mm

il post a pic my bike

that's a 3en2 if it's 42mm! could have been swapped into the frame i guess or it's a 3en2 frame (air pipes under headlights are usually 3en2's) but you say 1wg frame...

All the FZR 400 models upto 1990 had 1WG as their frame prefix. The 2TK, '88 3EN1 and '89 3EN2. If you go on the American FZR sites then the info you will generally receive will relate to the pre 1988 bikes which they call 1WGs even though Yamaha lists them as FZR400U and FZR400SUC. To confuse matters more, the American '88 and '89 bikes were the earlier model that Yamaha continued to sell over there.

Looks like a 3EN2 actually that's a FZR400R 3EN2 Exup, it will have 1WG on the frame and engine. The forks are 41mm dia, the discs are 298mm and you can fit blue spot calipers if you want to.

Use a 3HE engine and it should drop in. The airbox is the same as the 400 but you'll find it sits a little higher so you might space the tank shroud up a bit - there are mounting points for the bodwork into the shroud though. You might want to get a secondhand loom for it and a cdi, you can run the bike on the 400 cdi though. Change the headlights for a pair of UK lamps, the 1000 Exup had them and a year of 600, they'll have H4 bulbs which are cheaper and better light than the Yam only ones in the 400.
Run the chain you have but go for a 520 when you change
