i'm gussing it's the different variations. they're known as genesis, 1wg, 3en1(air intake above the lights), 3en2(intake below lights) and 3tj (non us model) over here, couldn't tell you which model matches the w and s for you though!

hi,
I would put the VIN number into a search VIN number database and see what the bike actually is.
The WIKI has a listing:--

the W is an 89 model, a 88 is a U and a 90 is a A. The S is probably a California model.

Dru,
The owner is in Canada so it could be from anywhere in the world market not just the US as Nik in Trinidad found out with his "Canadian" 600 it was from Germany via the UK then Canada. Hence the VIN number check for point of market origin.

He was referring to ordering parts. Since the other models(3en 3tj etc) weren't sold directly in Canada dealers don't list them.

D,
which is why I suggested a VIN check for market origin since as I said a friend of mine bought his FZR600 in Canada but it was originally intended for Germany according to the Yamaha VIN plate.
Since Yamaha dealers only originally stock model parts for stuff they bought direct, he may be in a spot of bother getting part numbers. However Yamaha dealers do have access to the main data base via Yamaha wholesales Japan
so he could get part numbers etc that way IF the dealer will co-operate. Which is how come I got Nik in Trinidad his parts info.
