Runs fine until warmed up, then dies

Post by Coot »

Hey all

I have an 89 FZR400 IWG that I have disassembled, powder coated, painted and generally restored including a thourough carb clean. When I got her all back together she fired up after a few attempts and idled perfectly. So I took her out for a short spin around the block. A few hundred yards down the road she lost power and died. I tried to start her up again and she fired but wouldnt stay running unless you hold the throttle wide open, even then she wont rev and dies as soon as throttle is decreased.

The sypmtoms are that she runs fine when first firing her up (cold), but after getting warm she dies. After that she wont rev. You can keep the engine running with the throttle wide open, but she will not rev and dies as soon as you let off of the throttle.

I live in a really small town and I had the local ATV mechanic drop by and take a look. He is sumped as well. I dont understand why she runs fine then loses compression.

I have replaced all spark plugs, as well as the fuel pump, filter and all lines. It just seems like she is starved for fuel. The mech and I also bench synced the carbs and set float height.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks,
