R6 calipers on 90 fzr 400 sac
Am i hearing correctly that yamaha R6 calipers will bolt straight on to 90 fzr 400 front end, i know the spacing is 100mm on my front end, and i believe that the R6 blue dot calipers are 100mm, anybody have informations on this ?? thanks.

Straight bolt on according to an FZR4 pal, another had to put ashim between caliper & leg(slightly warped disk I suspecta she only had to do it one side.

Great news George, im curious though, there both 2 piston calipers right ? so is it really a good upgrade ?, i mean is there going to be a good difference in my braking ?
thanks George.

I changed out the whole lot from OEM lines to R6 calipers & modern master cylinder and it was a night & day difference. You can read about it on my web site:-Fzrmike33 wrote:Great news George, im curious though, there both 2 piston calipers right ? so is it really a good upgrade ?, i mean is there going to be a good difference in my braking ?thanks George.

EDITTED:-
the other plus is that repair kits for the caliper will be easier to obtain.
Re: R6 calipers on 90 fzr 400 sac
Direct bolt-on. Both calipers are 4 piston designs. I don't think it is a huge improvement unless you also upgrade the master cylinder. The FZR master cylinder is the weaker link in that system.
FZR400 (1WG): Purchased a perfectly good FZR400 with Yoshimura slip-on/EXUP, Yosh jet kit, Factory ignition advance, Racetech springs and emulators. It even had great bodywork. Like some diseased maniac I had to mess with everything good about that bike. Well, at least I have better brakes now.

i swapped the whole lot on my fzr600r and i have to say the diff is awsome just use light pressure even for stoppies now. Really brill upgrade

FZR600R '94'
Bluespot calipers
Wavey front discs
R6 front mastercylnder
R6 lever mountings with short adjustable levers
YZF600R (thundercat) rear adjustable shock
Mild steel chain adjusters
Art can with removable baffle
Carbon fiber chain guard
Glass fiber rear seat-hump

Re: R6 calipers on 90 fzr 400 sac
Im getting mixed reviews on this swap, i have people here telling me not a big difference at all, and others saying huge braking difference
. I went on yahoo groups for fzr 400, and somebody had the same question as me, and everybody that answered said good impovment going to R6 calipers, so i guess that settles that.
Im only thinking of doing it because im sure in the future i will sticking a 600cc motor in my bike, more weight, need better braking, but i think for now i will just rebuild my calipers , i have Russell steal lines already, throw some new pads i should be fine. I can see getting this bike back to a street bike aint going to be cheap, so have to watch the budget, but its good to know i can do this in the future, thanks for all your input.

When I swapped brakes on my '89 1WG (2 piston calipers), I upgraded to R6 calipers and master cylinder. It was major a improvement. I have the original FZR calipers (4 piston) on my 3TJ with a Brembo radial master cylinder and stopping power feels much the same as the R6 set-up. However, the Brembo offers improved feel/control over the R6 brakes.

Re: R6 calipers on 90 fzr 400 sac
Ok so if i want to keep my calipers and just put a new master cylinder, i need a master cylinder that has a piston that matches my calipers ??? 12mm 10mm etc ?. So what size master cylinder piston in mm do i need ?
Re: R6 calipers on 90 fzr 400 sac
3TJ calipers look similar to, but are not identical to 1WG. The pistons could be the same size but I'm not sure. At any rate, I'm using a 19mm master cylinder with 18:1 leverage ratio. The leverage ratios inherent in radial masters allow them to go with larger pistons. R6 radials have 16mm pistons and I believe the non-radial ('99-'04) R6 masters were 14mm. I know someone who swapped in an early R6 master cylinder with his FZR calipers. He said it was a significant improvement. He later swapped to R6 calipers instead of rebuilding the FZR units, but would have been happy either way. (Commuter use only).
I have all the math involved in calculating appropriate MC/caliper ratios somewhere, but if it were me, I would just get an early R6 master cylinder (radial masters will interfere with your temp guage) for now, and upgrade the calipers at a later point.

Thanks Todd that sounds like a good idea just get a R6 master. I wont have any issues with my lines hooking up to it ? newbie here

Re: R6 calipers on 90 fzr 400 sac
I didn't.
Now excuse me while i get back to disecting a YZF wiring harness.

Re: R6 calipers on 90 fzr 400 sac
The difference is this those who say oh much the same did NOT change the master cylinder .Fzrmike33 wrote:Im getting mixed reviews on this swap, i have people here telling me not a big difference at all, and others saying huge braking difference![]()
. I
Those who found a huge difference used a R6 (or similar ) master cylinder along with the blue spots.
the difference in "feel" is of course subjective BUT the mechanical ratio of M/cylinder & bore to the caliper bores is what gives the real answer. Blue spots need a slightly bigger piston to "power " them which is why with only two fingers you can pull the bike up to a stoppie real easy.
For those of a nervous disposition you can leave a tiny bit of air in the system to give you a slightly less abrupt stop !

I would be worried about using 2 fingers and being able to do an endo. What happens if something runs out in front of you and you panic with no where to swerve? Flip over them. I guess it's all about getting use to the amount of pressure to use, just like stock brakes huh?

Hence my note to those who are of a nervous disposition, it helps with the learning curve of developing the "feel" for the brakes. Once this feel is developed the little air can be bled out.
