FZRSupport: the FZROnline Archive

I have tried to search so hopefully I am not missing something. I have an 88 FZR 400. It seems like it is getting harder and harder to find tires and find them at reasonable price. Does any one have any recommendations for the most reasonable tires. I ride it on the street and occasionally do a couple track days. Also I am running the stock wheels.

if you have any friends that race 400's, you could always ask for their take offs. that's how i get mine...

I think you're probably down to Avon tires or Shinko Podiums for the street. For the track, they should still make the Bridgestone BT-090.

I found some Avons, Bridgestones, Metzlers, for the street for 18". Yeah the 18" rim is not good, im thinking of switching out to 17" rims, then you can run any tire you want.

Not so fast. Just switching to a 17" doesn't necessarily open up the tire world. Most new sport bike tires are 180 or 190 rears and you will max out at a 160 with a 17" rim and that's if you install a YZF600 swingarm.

Thanks folks, Shift I imagine you are buying from the folks at Summit? I am in Salisbury. I noticed the Shinko and Avons would they be any good for a track day? I am def. not conquering the world when I do a track day, but I like to have fun. It is just the tire cost is becoming prohibitive.

The 400 doesn't have enough power to really throw out the back tire in tight corners, so those tires should work fine. Keeping the bike as upright as possible will certainly help.

rodeoclown, i have a bro who races in the lightweight class and gives me his take offs for free. so i run a bridgestone 090 rear and a pirelli dragon supercorsa pro front.

and rage, with enough lean, a 250 has enough power to to lose the rear. as with any sized motor, the more upright a bike is, the more gas and brake you can apply. at full lean, (full lean being the bike's ability, not the riders ability) abrupt gas or brake can have you sliding rather fast.

You obviously don't eat as well as I do... ha!

I figured he wasn't into racing, so his lean angle was more than likely not an area of concern.

Actually, it does thanks to the Ninja 250R. There are many 150/60/17's on the market. I dream of riding an FZR400 on proper size Pilot Powers.
