R6 Forks 3TJ Wheel

This is for a 600 but i'v got 3tj yokes so i'l post in the 400 section :)

So. 3tj yokes, R6 forks. Will the 3tj front wheel fit?? Or any other 400 wheel that takes a 120 tyre.

I was going to use an r6 wheel. But i have a couple of sets of good disks with the fzr600 so i think it would be a cheaper option to get the 3tj wheels. (i need a pair for 2 sets of tyres)

Cheers!

From what I know/have read the FZR 400 and 600 have 38mm stanchions, so the R6 forks will not fit the yokes (or as our American friends call the yokes, triple tree) The R6 wheel probably wont fit the FZR.

3tJ 400 Stanchions are 43mm (if memory serves) and early R6 forks fit. Common mod actually. Also, seem to recall the R6 axle being bigger in diameter. So, with that said, you'll probably need a few spacers machined to get the FZR wheel to fit and be centered. This isn't a situation where it's totally out of the question.

I have had conventional 43mm R6 forks in a 3TJ triple mounted to a 1WG. As the OP is probably aware, the R6 forks will fit the FZR400RR (3TJ) triples, as the 3TJ utilizes 43mm forks. The R6 front spindle is lager than the 3TJ, so some machine work will be required to fit the 3TJ wheel. 3TJ is the only FZR400 that ran a 120 up front. You should be able to machine the 3TJ wheel to accept the R6 bearings, but that won't leave much material in the hub. You will most likely need to fabricate some spacers, as well. I just ran the R6 wheel.

Are 3TJ wheels really a cheaper option for you?

thank you

This info should be in the wiki

Thanks!
I'l look to buy a wheel and see what spacers i need to make. I guess it involves getting the 3tj axle and kind of sleeving a spacer inside the forks? Steel or alluminum?

As to the cost, 3tj wheels go on ebay for a little less than R6 wheels (but less common), its the R6 disks seem to fetch allot of money. I need two front wheels so it starts getting expensive.

I'm thinking my FZR600 disks will go onto the 400 wheels?

Thanks

YPM,
steel bushings inside the forks, spacers ie side loaded stuff steel or alloy, The axle can have additional steel bushings added for the wheel just a little trickier to change wheels.

See my site stuff for a mod that is much like yours but at the rear end under the project-1 heading of the FZR section.

As to disks most yamaha models are the same bolt pattern at the front, the rear disk on 400's vary !!!

Thanks George. I did see that i have a 3tj swingarm and rear wheel i'v just got to have a the swingarm bush/spacer sleeved down.

Just brought a front wheel so should start coming together quite fast.

More questions when the parts arrive and it starts going together :)

As far as I can tell FZR600 front rotors are the same as 3TJ.

How do you get the fork pinch bolts to provide enough clamping force against the spindle with bushings inside the bore? I would actually like to run a 3TJ wheel on some R6 forks, if that would work.

I've been looking through the WIKI They measure the same.

1990RR Front Brakes 2x 298mm discs 2 piston calipers
1990RR-SP Front Brakes 2x 298mm disc 4 piston calipers
1991-92_fzr600 Front Brakes 2x 298mm discs 4 piston calipers

Also

Year 1990RR Front Suspension 41mm Telescopic forks
Year 1990RR-SP Front Suspension 43mm Upside-down forks with adjustable preload, rebound and compression damping.

What a wonderful WIKI we have

You probably just want the yokes. Unless your putting them on a 3TJ, the forks will likely be too short, and you may not like how low the clip-ons will need to mount. Better to put R6 forks in the 3TJ triple.

Be careful. Much of that info is in error.
None of the FZR400s were fitted with 41mm forks. The T-cats got 41mm not 43mm, and only the '89-'90 FZR1000 had 43mm.

Thanks for digging that up.

Should save a fair bit of money using these disks and the wheel will match the rear 3tj wheel i will be using. Win

Not sure how the wheel will fit yet as i havent seen the parts yet.

I'l post up everything up on the forum as the project progress's.

In the mean time i'l have a google for similar swaps to get some ideas. (or i could do some work...)

I have a 92 FZR600 does that still apply. Thanks.

Unfortunately, the WIKI is wrong. All 3TJ/4DX models had 4 piston calipers, and all of them had 41mm conventional forks. The SP models were fully adjustable but they were not inverted. Wish they were. Then I might be able to get away with racing superstock when I swap my front end. Just goes to show, you really need to confirm information posted on public forums. Look at the bikes first hand or check out http://www.rampant-racing.com/fzr400models.html.

I've located a set of upside down FZR400 3TJ forks.
