The feel on my front brake lever is rock hard so I guess the seals have lost there rebound and need replacing.
I am looking for a cheap source for the seals kit as I have the 4 piston type. Here in Australia Yamaha wants $43 per seal kit. Each kit has 4 seals so I am told that I have to buy 4 kits to do both calipers. Grand total of $173. A bit rich if you ask me. Anyone know a good source ?

According to what you have written your math is wrong

A seal kit is for 4 seals = 1 caliper ie 1 per pot(4 pot calipers on 90 onward or Blue spots)

since it is front calipers that is 2 kits @ 43 OZ D= 86 for the whole deal.

Not so george. Each piston has 2 seals. The kit they are selling looks like it's for 1 side of 1 caliper.

I would just buy a new brake setup from ebay or from a forum member. You'll pay a lot less even with shipping factored in to the other side of the world.

Well, ordered a set a few months back and have them to rebuild my front calipers, so I'll be able to provide a definite answer after I get off work.

And yes, the Yamaha parts fiche is very, very confusing as to how many come in a kit.

Err BUT that is not what he wrote either his description is off or his math is ?

I just looked at the Micro fiche at

part numers 5 * 2 for 1 left caliper & & 14 * 2 for 1 right caliper .
so that is 2 kits per caliper .............

One front caliper kit for the 4 piston front calipers:

I had to spread them out so you could see in this pic but you have 2 oil seals (1 large 1 small) and 2 dust seals (1 large 1 small) in this kit. Means you'll need 2 per caliper.


Which made me realize I need to order 2 more front caliper kits.

On the rear, however, one kit does the entire caliper.


You might not be able to see it all that well but the rear kit has 2 oil seals and 2 dust seals.

The only reason I am rebuilding mine (besides to be able to say I did) is that I have a set of EBC HH sinstered pads with less than 2k on them and another brand new set sitting on the shelf. Until the cost of rebuilding the calipers is more than the cost of picking up a set of blue dots and getting a new set of EBC HH pads, I'm actually saving money.

In your case, if you need to replace your pads anyway, I'd keep my eyes open for a good deal on a blue dots or gold dots (97+ YZF600, early R1 and R6, most FZ1 and FZ6 I've seen). I picked up a set of blue dots from a '97 YZF600 for $25 shipped on eBay a year ago that came with a front master cylinder, sold the calipers for $25, and basically got a free master cylinder.
