Newbie question about restriction

Hello everyone, my name is Magdi and i'm from Suffolk in the UK

I've recently got my hands on an FZR 400RR 3TJ model but im having a bit of an issue, i've already posted a similar question on 400greybike but the responses have been somewhat varied.

Basically, as far as i know and please correct me if i'm wrong, when you open the clocks and attempt to manually remove the 112mph restriction, it limits the bike to 12,500 RPM in each gear and the only way to remove this is to get one of the M-MAX restriction boxes, or replace the clocks with unmolested ones.

I just want some clarification on this really, as if thats true i know i either need an M-Max box or a new set of clocks which hasn't been touched, as i'm not likely to go over 112mph anyway

Thanks

I forgot to add that when i got the bike it was limited to 12,500 rpm in gear - i didnt touch the clocks

As I understand it, the restrictor for the jap home market restricts top speed only and shouldn't affect revs in the lower gears.

I've heard that disconnecting the speedo disables the restrictor, so I would've thought some other clocks would solve your problem.

Thanks for the reply, i'm aware that the jap restriction is only for the top speed
however according to other users on 400greybike, apparently when using the manual method of de-restricting the top end, if something is done wrong inside the clocks it can cause the bike to be restricted to 12,500rpm in every gear

Would this be clock, or CDI related do you think?

Your TCI monitors the speed signal from the speedo, and the gear signal from the GPS. Unplug or otherwise fiddle with the speedo, and the TCI clamps down at 12.5k. Same with the gear wiring.

There was a discussion going at http://www.400greybike.info/newforum/vi ... =37&t=2518 ; this gave a few suggestions. I'm trying to track down the 3TJ wiring diagram - I might have an idea to re-create the "M-Max" de-restrictor box.

Watch this channel...

Thanks for that, i pm'd you too

So is the only way to sort this an M-Max box? would a new set of clocks do it or is M-max or similar gonna be the only way

Guys,
Interesting question but I think your best bet is to find the "racer" community for FZR 400's and I know that a lot are based at

"FZR400@yahoogroups.com"

I doubt any of them want their bike limited to 12.5K rpm :whistle

I am sure that the TDI will need replacing as that is the ignitions brain that takes info from the speedo & gears and maps the advance curve and rev limiter to a pair of cylinders

What exactly is the TCI? i know what a CDI is

Is it contained within the clocks? as thats why i'm asking, as there's a set ending on ebay here for £1 later tonight, if that could sort it i might go for it

TCI is Transistor Controlled Ignition...CDI is Capacitor Discharge Ignition.

Our bikes have TCI---not CDI.

It is the flat 'box' under the seat that says "ignitor" or "transistorized ignition".

CDI takes the signal from the pickup coil, amplifies it, applies a processor determined advance factor, and puts a fairly high voltage (200-500 AC or DC depending on system) through the ignition coil's primary windings-which induces spark in the secondary windings...which travels down the HT lead to the spark plugs.

TCI (ours) interrupts the constant battery voltage to the coils to inductively 'fire' them.....TCI is basically a solid state set of points. It also 'reads' the pickup coil signal, applies the advance factor..but acts as an 'off' switch' to collapse the energized field in the coil to cause spark at the right time.

"CDI" is often mistakenly used as a generic term for electronic box ignition.

Sounds to me like you need a non-JHM TCI to me....or the m-max module.

That might be possible have you talked to the racers on the list I mentioned ? also I notice that in your profile you have no location listed might be an idea to add it so the guys know where you are to help search...........

i would buy from abroad so long as the price was right, as obviously i've got to bare postage in mind

but i think i'm right in saying the 3TJ's weren't imported into the USA, am i right or completely wrong
