fzr400 gravity feed instead of fuel pump??

I want to modify my gas tank to be gravity fed instead of relying on a fuel pump. my 89 fzr400 is getting old and i don't want to be out somewhere very far and have the fuel pump die out. if i can make it gravity fed then there is one less thing for me to worry about when traveling far.

somebody created a aluminum gas tank for the FZR400 but was that gravity fed? or has anybody created such thing??

I have never heard of it. Get you a new pump and you wont have worries while your out.

I say go for a newer pump as well. There are a lot of other things that can go wrong as well...

I could be wrong and can't remember where i read it but the first gen SV650 (carbed models) supposedly have a gravity feed style pump....i think.

The problem with the fzr is that the lowest point in the tank is lower than the bowls on the carbs. This would not allow you to get all the fuel out of one tank. I'm sure it would work just fine until you get to about half a tank.

xian13 used a Vacuum pump on his fzr683 off a sv650.

The race guys that run total loss systems install new jet ski petrol pumps because they are reliable and draw less power than the fzr pump.
Maybe good comprimise...

Yea. i know i can just get a new pump but i'm trying to make it more reliable from the start.

total loss system? is this a team?

sorry but what is a jet ski petrol pump? where does it come from

a total loss system is one in which you dont have a charging system. once the bike is running, it will run, but if you stall it, you have to bump start it. saves weight for when you are racing, but there is no starter or anything like that. And I am assuming the jet ski petrol pump is a fuel pump from a jet ski watercraft.

The 'watercraft vacuum pumps' need to have a vacuum pulse signal.

You can get that anywhere on the crankcase of a TWO STROKE engine.

On ours, with (fairly) balanced crankcase vacuum, I am not sure how well it would work.

There's a lot of things that are more unreliable than electric fuel pumps,

And, seeing how every Autozone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto etc. (and you'll never be farther than about 50 miles from one of them, here in teh USA) carries 12v regulated fuel pumps...for a decent price....I can't see worrying about it too much.

The watercraft(we call them jet ski).Infact never heard of watercraft before in New Zealand,fuel pump is in one of the FZR1000w race bikes that was racing last season.I dont have the model that it came from or the email address of the guy using it so i will have to confirm it next meet which is May.
i do seem to recall suzuki 1300cc which would mean busa gsx1300k1 motor which is electric without crank breather.You could try that for a starting point.It was installed because one round per year is a double weekend with three 35min races.The FZR1000 wont last much further than 25minutes on one battery because of the current draw of the pump unless you have huge battery.Some guys run two batteries with change over switch for that round.I have still got starter and alternator cause im to lazy to push start bike and we have the ocassional delayed start for track clean ups etc so i like to shut mine down and restart it so it doesnt get hot.
