VR/R Confusion

I'm looking at replacing the original voltage regulator on my 1988 3BF, but I'm confused. I've checked out the CPR for the VZR topic in the old archives, but all the years referenced are newer than my bike. There seems to be a ton of voltage regulators available. Is the RM30X01 from RMStator a viable option for my model or is there a different one that's more compatible?

As the 3BF (and the 1WG also) has got the same regulator as the FZR 600 3HE/3HH all replacementmanuals to fit a FZR 600R/ YZF 600 or a R6 Regulator (or aftermarketregulators as from Barth or Shinyo) in a 3HE/3HH will work. A direct exchange without rewiring will work with the 3HE/3HH but as they have the same problems a Regulator from later models would be a better solution, even if a little rewiring is required then. I guess in the Wiki there should be an advise somewhere how to rewire the regulators to the FZR 600 which you can adapt diretcly to the 3BF ;)
For those who don“t dare to rewire the Plug to make a 4JH (FZR 600R/YZF 600) Regulator working in a 3HE/3HH/3BF/1WG theres a short adapterwire for fitting a 4JH Regulator directly available from Yamaha, so any Yamaha-Dealer should be able to get one for his customer if demanded ;)

Thanks for the insight. I've found the page you were referencing in the wiki here.

Why don't you just fit a 1wg / 3he reg rec and have done with it ? They're not the most sophisticated design but they get the job done and will probably outlast the bike.
It might be great to have something superfantastic in there but, it will cost more, it's more dicking about than a plug in solution, you've still got to mount it on the frame, and, finally it isn't going to get the job any better than the original type. You don't really need it.

*IF* you go with a 4-pin design, go with a NEW item. Any used part will have many years service under unknown conditions, and might be ready to spit out the dummy in two days. Don't bother with a cheapo eBay knock-off, but a real Yamaha part, or at the very least something like an RMStator unit, where you can call up a human at an office and yell at them.

I was under the impression that they had a high failure rate. Both the Wiki's at FZRarchives and here indicate to upgrade to a YZF/R6/R1 VRR at all cost. So I was following what I thought was good advice.

Not really. I've been around FZR400's for 10 years and while they do fail it's not that high, certainly not like Hondas which do upgrade using the R6 unit. Chances are yours is the original reg rec so it's 20 years old, if a new only lasts 10 years it won't be bad value.
