Same old questions from a new FZR400 owner

Hi Folks,
I just purchased a 1988 FZR400. I have read some of the threads on here but, didn't find answers to my particular questions. They may well be here but, I just can't seem to find them so please bear with me.

1. Being an '88 with a JYA3FHC VIN what model is my bike? "C", does that mean California?
2. The bike I bought does not have an air box, it has K&N pods on it. Is this a good set up or should I try to find an air box?
3. The bike has a Fox Twin Clicker on it but, it does not have a means of ride height adjustment on the shock. Are the adjusable links I've seen out there a viable means of ride height adjustment?
4. Rear wheel swap? Okay, I know this is the one that may make you guys pull your hair out... Aside from the swap to a TZ250 rear wheel, has anybody found a reasonable rear wheel swap? I understand most anything else will require machine/fab work but, wondering if someone has found something that does not require extensive reworking?

These are the biggest questions I have for now.

The bike will run a lit better using an airbox - CV carbs run better when they're in still air.

Did you get the XJR400 over there ? They use 17" rear wheels

Hi,
the wiki has a section on how to decode the VIN number

Pods on the FZR DO work BUT they need to be spaced off by the same length as the box to carb rubber!
Ride height is variable with "dog bones" and there are guys on here sell an adjustable set of dog bones that work with screw threads


PLEASE do not buy multi-hole dog bones as I have seen some VERY soft materials used where the adjacent holes are so close that the slightest wear would cause the dog bone to slide suddenly with catastrophic results.

As for rear wheel swaps take a look at my web site I used FZR swing arms so you will see what works with what and the GOTCHA's involved

yeh they look sturdy enough with plenty of "meat" all around the holes and a sensible material. I take it you have used them at some point in your re-builds ? the company name is familiar too\
but cannot quite pin it down in memory. Old age again LoL

They are from Kayla, a knowledgeable member on a good few forums, George.
She did quite a bit developing the R6 shock conversion in the early days plus different s/a and wheel combinations.
I use a lot of http://www.projection-components.co.uk/ parts where necessary.

1) My Cali 400 has the same VIN prefix, but the only significant difference is that Cali bikes had EXUP, which also means no passanger seat. (The EXUP servo motor lives beneath the rear cowl). (See my avatar).
2) Air-box is really recomended for CV carbs on the 400
3) Ask reelrazor about adjustable dog bones.
4) Best rear wheel swap for the FZR400 is from an FZR400RR. (Those are pretty scarce, depending on your local). SV650 and CBR600F3 are popular rear wheel swaps in the U.S. (Additional info can be found on the "other site". http://www.fzrarchives.com/ipb/index.php?showtopic=473)

I have a spare 3TJ swing arm & Rear axle sitting here bought for someone who has since disappeared of planet FZR it owes me 50+ UKP shipping state side worked out to be about 50 + UKP.
