How to make my FZ400 faster on the track??

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and had a major question which I know a few of you might know the answer to. So this season I've been racing a RZ350 stroker, SV650, and had the FZR400 as a back up/rain bike but last weekend the RZ went on the fritz. So I raced the FZR400, handled great but just needed to get 5 more ponies out of it to reach the top guy. My mods on it so far are: R6 front end/ R6 rear shock, 17" front and rear wheels, Jet kit (drilled slides), K&N filter, 4l plastic tank. d&d header pipes with Q4 exhuast (no exup). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's your gearing like? The 400 likes to scream, so don't be shy about running it a bit short and bouncing off the limiter on the straights.

What shape is your chain in? (Since you're racing I hope it's pretty good! )

Advance your static timing about 5deg - here's how.

Further down that same thread; you'll find a suggestion to degree your cams and retard the intake by 10deg.

Have you confirmed your jetting on a dyno, or at least with lap times and plug chops? This isn't a TZ or RS, but one or two jet sizes either side of "right" will cost you power. Are you tuning to atmospheric conditions? Do you have a weather station? (Racing an RZ, I hope so!)

Welcome to the forum - put up some pics, already!

Clean the head up, grind the vavles in and then set the valve tolerances.
Make sure your carbs are well ballanced

Hose your brakes down with WD-40... Guarantee that will make you faster.

PS. This is a joke. Do not actually do this.

Might make you faster through one or two corners, but it won't do much for your overall laptimes ... :drink: :duh:

Thanks for all the helps guys!! WD40??? LOL this I will have too try as a last resort! I will dyno the bike after the ignition timing mod, and adding a tooth on the rear currently (16/45) and post the results. I don't think I'll have time to adjust the cams and flow the intakes/exhaust in time for the next race. As for a weather station I never run one I should but try to stay on the rich side of things after a plug chop most of the time. Man I really do love this bike though by far my best feeling vintage bike I have going. Thank again for all the replies.

What have you done with the suspension?

R6 front end and a 07 r6 rear shock (custom made dog legs for correct ride height)

Oh one more question???? Will any 400 stator work on my 89/90 FZR400? I was thinking of buying one and cutting it down just for the timing only and want to run a loss less bike. I think this would definitely make her rev happy!

Just unplug your VRR. The stator is stationary by definition, so there's no rotating mass savings to be had by 'cutting down' the stator.

You just made my night Don! So I can just remove the windings attached to the crank?

? There are no windings on the crank. The rotor has magnets, but no wires.

Aren't the alternator windings bolted to the inside of the casing on the 1WG ?
The 3TJ has them on the crank.

So I finally got around to adjusting the timing, but my setup is quite different than other FZR400 models please see my pic posted in the gallery section gallery2.php?g2_itemId=28952&g2_imageViewsIndex=2. On this stator there is one T mark and a two F marks that are approx 4mm apart from each other. When I'm checking the timing I advanced my timing light to 4-5 degrees and it shines on the right side of the F mark band. Is this correct? Your help is much appreciated.
