What are the best parts to stock up on? Will be on a regular hunt for parts since I'm planing to keep this bike for life. So would like to know what kinda good quality used parts I should be keeping an eye out for. Thanks.

How long do rubbers last sitting? The tires I have now are pretty new so not sure if buying another set now unused makes much sense.

Unless you know exactly what you're doing, stockpiling tires is a fast way to buy new fairings. Serious racers might buy 10 sets at a time, but will go through them in a season. If your tires last two seasons, it means the ones in your closet have been stored for that long ... where? In the garage, exposed to HC and ozone? Freezing temps? In the basement, exposed to mold and mildew and rodents?

There are still good supplies for sport tires, even race tires if you know where to look, for the OEM rims. Don't stockpile trouble.

If you plan keeping this bike for life the best thing would be simply save your money for another bike. From your threads this one sounds like its had a bit of a hard life and won't last that long without some serious TLC. Another bike will give you time to sort it out (or junk it).
Seriously spend on essentials but no more than that.

Thanks for the thoughts. I do intend to get a second bike down the road that is for sure. I guess my point is I intend to ride this one out for as long as I can and just like to be prepared down the road knowing this bike is old. I don't want to catch myself looking for parts when the time comes and I realize I have to ship this expensive part over that's only available from UK or something.

I have quite a few parts the I took off my FZR400 donor bike, About the only things I'm using are the frame and radiator. It was a racebike before I had it and it threw a rod. I sold the airbox and gave away the fuel pump and the wiring harness was hacked up. (CDI is still good) You can have it all for a six pack of Canada's finest if you want to come down to Buffalo and pick it all up. I'll take pics of the stuff if you want.

The good thing about the FZR is that the design didn't change for almost a decade - there are plenty of parts out there.

Thought I would have my FZR forever and then I found a great deal on a 2005 GSXR600. The good thing about newer bikes is the tire selection, aftermarket accessories, fuel injection, etc...

Good point. I know I will get another bike for sure. But I've always wanted a 80s racer so unless a find a crazy good deal on a rc30 or gsxr 400 I'm keeping this one for good it'll sit in my living room when it is broken down.

If you were to use it as a track bike then it would be smart to have a pile of spares like clipons, rear sets, shift and brake levers, clutch and brake levers, and so on.

As a street bike it's hard to say what you would need. If you know you are going to keep it for a long time the first thing I'd do is the swingarm swap to run a 180 rear wheel or find an SV650 rear wheel and for $300 send it to speed works and they will mod it to fit the stock swingarm so you can run a 160 rear tire.

There isn't really anything that I can think of that I can say make sure you have this in hand cause it will break and so you will be prepared. But the one thing I've always had and like having is a spare set of rims and tires. One set for commuting and one set for canyon carving. Also the spare set will come in handy if you get a flat. I just got a nail in my front tire on my FZ6 coming home from work so when I got home I swapped it out with my spare and no down time without the bike and can take my time finding a new tire.

The FZR did change completely from the Genesis in 86 to the 3TJ you can use some of the nuts and bolts though

Look for a good set of down pipes, I think Vance and Hines did an aftermarket set which might be nice. Look for some good OE bodywork over here TJ top fairings are hard to find and often broken

The Gix 400 are a difficult bike and best avoided, they look nice though. The 400 was the first GSXR
