From the video.....

Is that the fuel pump running at circa 0.18, 0.39, 0.50, and 0.57 ?

If so then that is incorrect.
The pump should fill the bowls initially and then only work very little to refill the bowls.
In your video of 1.31 minutes it appears to be running a lot more than it should.

Has the fuel supply pipe to the pump been kinked or nipped up preventing the pump getting fuel ?

Yup I'm with Will - fuel starvation
I bet you've got a kinked fuel line.
Has the line been replaced with a straight piece - get a good look with the tank in place and feel around for a kink or a tight bend. If it's not fuel line then it's the tap .... might not be quite "on"

Some of those pipes feeding the pump are a special shape.

If a generic length of pipe has been used to replaced them it often allows fuel to flow until the engine heat makes it soften and kink which could account for your original breakdown.

Thanks for the replies guys!!!

I will check for kinks in the pipe.

I've not balanced carbs as I haven't changed anything... Do I really need to? Is it hard?

If you haven't synch'd the carbs, it probably needs it. It isn't hard, and there are plenty of how-to's out there to make your own home-built (and very accurate!) gauge set.

Couldn't find any kinks, hoping I just need to balance the carbs.

I plan to whip them off and do a quick check on the float adjustments too.

Found a great 'how to' thread on it here:

Anyone know a good place to buy MIG tips in the UK?

Right, bit of an update...

It seems the fuel pump has given up the ghost.

With a full tank and the bike facing downhill it starts (eventually) and almost revs nicely!

However with the bike facing up hill it struggles to start and won't rev.

Having checked old threads the next on my list is:
+ Drain carb bowls and check how pump is operating;
+ Check for loose / frayed wires in pump wiring;
+ Research replacing rubber plunger inside pump???;

Just replace the pump - they're fairly standard on Yamahas so have a look about on ebay

I've been using the bike with a full tank and haven't had any problems recently.

Scared myself when I realised I'd not tightened up the back axle enough after taking the chain off.. I was braking for a roundabout and the back wheel started weaving around. At first I thought I had a flat but then I quickly worked it out and didn't feel much safer.

It's coming up to MOT time so I thought I'd better sort out some mirrors.
I found these on eBay for a good price and I think they look good: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321858771187

Seems to have developed a light tapping at high revs from the top end, I will whip the cam cover off when I'm next playing with the rad and take a look. Where's the best place to buy gaskets?

This is the replacement fuel pump I've got bookmarked:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151994995373

It has 6mm inlet/outlet which looks right to me but the only concern I have is that my pipes are set up for a right angle inlet and as previously mentioned if I try to use current fuel lines I may end up with a kink in them...

Anyway, thoughts on the track style new look?

You never though to take off a fuel hose and measure the internal dia .... you know, in case it's 8mm ???

UPDATE
It's been some time since I last posted on this thread so here's an update:

The fuel issue was sorted by cleaning the contacts in the back of the fuel pump and I've not had any similar issues since.

During the bike's recent MOT a few issues were picked up, I then managed to get shards of metal puncturing both tyres on a single ride out so the bike has been set aside for some repairs before it's back on the road.

TYRES
So new tyres should be an easy one, at the moment I'm looking at buying these and getting my garage to fit them:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350491515319? ... EBIDX%3AIT
110/70-17 & 150/60-18 HR Bridgestone Battlax BT090
Image

EXHAUST
The MOT inspector gave me an advisory for the hole in the exhaust at the top of the no2 header pipe and it seems to be causing the valves to tap???
Image
Image

With a bit of patience, the aid of a blowtorch, WD40 and a massive dose of good luck I managed to remove the exhaust first time without ANY damage!

But now I'm in two minds as to whether to pay for a repair or a new set of pipes from Black Widow Exhausts:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FZR400-FZR-40 ... SwFnFWCogT

The other option is an old setup from ebay for 1/4 the price but how long it would last is a bit of a gamble
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252430791010? ... EBIDX%3AIT
Image

If I do go for the new one I need to choose between these three silencers, I cant imagine the stubby looking good on the bike and am tempted to go with the longest to give the quietest sound...
ImageImageImage

Also, thinking this might be a good time to change over that bent piece of frame... can I do this without the engine falling on the floor if I do them one at a time???

EBay's seller description of used system in good condition may vary vastly from your idea of good.
Then you have to fund return carriage plus the grief.

The mid length can might look the best on the new system you linked..get the tape measure out and scale it against the bike.

You can remove both the side rails at once ....the motor is supported by other fixings.
I regularly remove both at once. and send them off for blasting/coating as a pair.

The "tapping" you hear IS the hole in the headers blowby.....I doubt it is the valves.

Get them tyres straight away...those sizes are getting scarcer by the day...the price is good too.
Round and Black are a recommended company.

Thanks for your fantasticly helpful response as always willandrip!!! Really appreciate the advice.

Yeah, second hand exhausts are cheap for a good reason.

Bought the tyres, my only reservation now is that they might be quite old stock. Let's not get into the tyre debate. If you're reading this and looking for tyre info there was a good thread recently right here:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12893

Anyway, I've done some research on the Black Widow exhausts as I'd not heard the name before. Turns out that until recently they were called Sandy's Bike Spares (SBS) and had a pretty atrocious record for their exhausts....

I've also heard that the exhausts for the 600s fit (though they hand half an inch lower - still fit in fairing) so I'm going to take a look round d to see if any of the big manufacturers still make them. Any hints would be appreciated!
