RoadDogma wrote:Umm. The swingarm pictured in the auction is commonly referred to as a "deltabox" swingarm to distinguish it from the other (1WG/3EN) swingarms and is so called because of it's constructions and the decal which reads "deltabox" found on the side. The only models I am aware to use this swingarm is the US 1990 1WG and 3EN2s.

The 3TJ swingwarm differs in that it is wider, cast around the pivot area where it bears the designation, "3TJ". The pivot axle is also a larger diameter, but I have measured the same length (pivot axle to wheel axle) on both swingarms.

Regarding the 17" wheel question, either of the 1WG swingers could accept a 17" wheel, but it would be easier with the 3TJ swingarm. Just run the 3TJ wheel.

Hope this clears any confusion.

RD,
ok to sum up In Europe that kind of cast construction was used on the 3TJ (mine UK had no stickers saying Delta box ) early US 1WG had extruded alloy swing arm but later models (1990 US mode)l had a similar shape to the cast arm with a sticker with "delta box" on one side (?)

If I had read my own work (LoL) I would have remembered that the 3TJ pivot bolt is bigger in diam than 1WG but the same length (which is why the the FZR6 3HE model bolt needed sleeving ).

The critical bit is that the casting is wider where the tyre fits so 18" & 17" larger tyre can be fitted .

As you say the easy trip is to use the 3TJ wheel / sprocket carrier & brake disk with caliper bracket & caliper

3TJ wheels use bigger axles so read my GOTCHA'S on my site if you intend to mix & match bits and doing a swap on a fzr600 3HE

QUESTION:-
3EN2 made it to the States as an official import ? as this is contrary to all I have heard of 400's?

I guess my previous post was less effective than I had hoped. Neither of the 1WG swingarms were cast. Perhaps having had 5 FZR400s (four 1WGs and a 3TJ) has given me greater opportunity to examine a variety of swingarms. So to clarify; '88-'89 1WG had rectangular box-section swingarms, the 1990 1WG employed the "Deltabox" swingarm which like the rectangular variety was constructed of extruded aluminum. As stated previously, the 3TJ arm differs in a number of areas including the "U" shaped cast construction around the pivot point that attaches to the frame. (The swingarm in the auction is extruded). I would post pictures of all three but they are on another computer.

I wouldn't feel badly about your 3TJ swingarm lacking the "Deltabox" sticker. My 3TJ swingarms don't either. That was a feature of the 1WG "Deltabox" swingarms. No, the 3EN2 was not an official import in the States (neither was my 3TJ) but it does share the 1WGs "Deltabox swinger.

Hopefully, this spells out the situation sufficiently, and will prevent anyone from buying a 1WG swingarm by mistake. Frankly, I'm surprised by the confusion as the 1990 1WG "Deltabox" swingarm is a pretty well known and sought after piece in the States.
FZR400 (1WG): Purchased a perfectly good FZR400 with Yoshimura slip-on/EXUP, Yosh jet kit, Factory ignition advance, Racetech springs and emulators. It even had great bodywork. Like some diseased maniac I had to mess with everything good about that bike. Well, at least I have better brakes now.

FZR400RR (3TJ):Yeah, it's pink.

I concur with Roaddogma. That is in fact what we, here in the states, refer to as a 1WG Deltabox swingarm (the one in the auction, that is). I've got two of them myself (along with a 3TJ RR swingarm).

Ok so that clears that bit of confusion up.1!WG was the only official FZR400 import but had two types of swing arm extruded box section tubing and a fabricated swing arm that is thicker at the stress strut and is SIMILAR in shape to the 3TJ.European version FZR400.

If you mean officially imported to the U.S., that would be correct. The '88 & '89 U.S. 1WGs were red & white (exactly like the one in the identifer). The '90 models were black with dark blue graphics (where the red is on the white ones). Other than the color scheme, the only differences between the '88 / '89 models and the '90 models are the swingarms ('90s had the Deltabox) and the the fact that our '90s came with 4-piston front calipers. Have a look at my track bike (signature - yeah, it's a small pic)). Although I bought the bike in pieces, it's essentially a '90 model (check out the swinger and the front calipers).

How about a pic of both 1WG swingarms next to a 3TJ swingarm?

Image

'88-'89 1WG rectangular "box section" in front, followed by a '90 1WG "Deltabox", then a 3TJ swingarm in back.

Thanks for putting that up. I was going to do the same but both of my 1WGs have wheels, etc. mounted to them. A good comparison shot would have been not doable.

You and every 600 rider on the site. Little bit shorter and much lighter than the steel stocker on the 600 puts these in high demand.

Hey, I'm just here to help. You just might have seen that deltabox swinger somewhere else, though. :whistle

Pictures worth a thousand words? Guess I could have saved a bunch of typing if I had just been ambitious enough to fire-up my old computer sooner. Well, at least that should deter any potential further confusion.

Even the rectangular "box section" swingarm would be an improvement to the 600. (IMHO)

+1 I've never understood why people post up pics of stuff without cleaning the items first (especially when they're selling). :headscratch: You never what may be hiding underneath all the grime. Hmmm... It looks like I just solved my own riddle.

BTW, is the garage set up yet? :whistle
