Fairing repairs or replacement

Good Afternoon

As a complete newby to not only this site but also the wonderfull world of FZR ownership I was hoping for some help. I recently managed to purchase a real gem of an FZR for a bargain price. It was imported in 1999 and has only covered 14000km. Other than a scorpion end can it is completely original the only down side is a small amount of damage to the lower front right fairing. Does anybody know where I could get this repaired or replaced near my location?

Which model is it ?
This is a rought guide

Single trapiziodal headlight (with 2 paralever lamps) - 3TJ / 4DX

Twin headlights (these are all referred to as 1WG)
Air intakes below the lights - 3en2
Air intakes above the lights - 3en1

No air intakes
Exup and single seat - 2TK
No Exup pillion seat - Genesis

If it's minimal damage ,can be stuck together and you just want it to be a quick repair then use some Plastex http://www.repairproducts.co.uk/page20.htm

If you want a reasonable panel then you'll probably need to watch ebay. The 3en1 and 3en2 panels are the same as FZR600 3HE but the paint schemes don't match. 3tj panels come up on the bay, they're not expensive just look at pics because condition can vary.

Brilliant thank you for you help. It is the 3en2 model i believe. Its a 1989 model fzr400r with the air intakes below the lights. It is actually currently in the garage having some work done and the hassle I am having with it is actually making me think about selling it once the work is completed. I will certainly keep an eye on ebay though to see if the right panel comes up. Thanks again for you help.

3EN2 - I've had two of them but Willandrip is your man for them.

They're not worth a lot of money, if you've got problems with starting it's probably the valve tollerances. The down pipes are getting old and there's nothing with an EXUP to replace them. You can fit a 600 3HE engine into the frame easily and blue spot calipers bolt on.

Black ones are faster



White ones can look good too

Thanks evilchicken. Mine is exactly the same as the one in the top picture the black one. I didn't have any trouble starting the first few days but after that it just started to run badly. The bloke at the garage said its because it had been sitting for a long time so there was a lot of s**t in the tank which had been sucked into the carbs. They have removed, drained and revealed the tank and also stripped cleaned and replaced the seals in the carbs so fingers crossed it will be running fine by the end of this week.

Hi and welcome to the forum;
Unlikely to be a valve clearance issue at less than 9k miles.
The carburation will be the issue as your garage confirms.
Be prepared for the carbs to require cleaning a few times when it has first been reused after it has stood for quite a while.
The components are very small and susceptable to blocking from dislodged material.
There is a vey small filter hidden in the fuel inlet that is often missing or overlooked in addition to the main filter by the pump.

If removing the tank; undo a small screw that retains the fuel tap lever and remove it;trying to manouver it past the frame rail and the harness will eventually snap off the tap lever/tap innards as they are brittle.
Persevere with it though;they are a cracking bike when running correctly.
That colour scheme is the rarer of the two;if the damage is repairable it would be better to repair , the replacement may be much worse.

EN2's are nice, the black is a "midnight" colour it has a bit of blue in it and was used on quite a few Yamahas of the time. Once the carbs are cleaned and you've run a couple of tanks of fuel through, it should be ok.

Thanks to all of the responses chaps you are all most helpful. I really want to stick with the bike as it is a cracking little machine. The handling is excellent and there is (when running) bags of power over 5000 rpm. I would like to post a picture of the machine on here but unsure how. My only concern is that realistically for me to warrant having a bike I should be able to commute to work on it but unfortunately that commute is 100 miles a day and I really do not want to rack the mileage up. We will see hopefully I will be getting the bike back this week as they are waiting for seals for th carbs. I am based near Cambridge.

Thanks again evilchicken most helpful. I have literally just had an update from the garage and they have said they have rebuilt the carbs and tested the bike and its running perfectly they are still sorting out the tank but it should be ready by this Saturday so fingers crossed a nice ride at the weekend will be possible. If not a blast to and from work in Hemel Hempstead on Monday will definitely be on the cards Monday.

Have fun dude. Ive got a 89 3tj1the fairing are rattle canned black the log book says black im just wondering what colour scheme it originaly was as its a restoration project heres a pic

It should be mostly black, with some graphite on the tail. There are two gold stripes that go from the tail down onto the back of the belly pan. There's a large FZR logo on the tail and two small ones on the fairing, there's an exup on the fairing too. Yamaha logos on the top fairing each side of the tank and on the tail.
