What wheel axle to use on 3TJ SP

Post by DAP019 »

Hey guys i am in need of some advise on a rear wheel axle for my 3TJ. I am in the states and cant get a 3tj axle very easily. Is the regular 400 wheel axle a fit on the 3TJ? I am pretty sure the 400 and 600 rear axle is 17mm and the 3tj is 20mm so i will need spacers made. Im not sure about the length of the axle. i am probably going to use the fzr1000 chain adjusters because they look like they will work with modding. I just dont know about bearing options with marchesinis and 3tj or regular 400.

(1) I need to know what is the best option for rear wheel axle and chain adjusters to use on my 3tj swinger with marchesinis.

(2) Also, can i use the regular 400 shock knuckle on the 3tj? As i need one of these also. i have a 08 r6 shock im about to make the shock mount for.

(3) What dog bones can use for a mock up? I am going to make some out of aluminum but would like to have some on there for setup phase. I assume the regular 400 but just want to be sure.

thanks in advance fellas, D

Not sure on 2 or 3, but if you're using a 1WG swingarm, have a 20mmOD / 17.1mm ID spacer machined that's about 1mm shorter than the spacer+wheel+etc stack.

Edit - another option would be to use a 20mm FZR1000 axle (double check - the earlier years were 17mm) and chain pullers. You'll probably need to get the 1k axle and thread machined to length, and the 1WG swingarm axle holes will need drilling out.

Yea i just found out that 89+ fzr1000 axle is 20mm which is same as 3tj. and the 3tj length is 330mm. do you know the length pf the fzr1000? if it is longer like you said i can rethread and shorten. does anyone know the length of the fzr1000? just to clarify i am using a 3tj sp swinger, awesome info bro thanks, i may have found a solution.

Update, bought a 95 fzr1000 rear wheel axle with the chain adjusters for 15 bucks, will see if it will work when it gets here. I still need the info on the shock knuckle tho. thanks D. i can prob make the knuckle work on the 3tj with spacers and stuff but really wanted to know if the width on the 3tj where the dogbones goes is the same width as the knuckle on the regular 400 where the doggy bones connect there. maybe i will just buy and see, but i hate wasting money as i am poor :(

Don't know it off-hand, but I'm fairly certain the 1k wheel is wider, which SHOULD mean a longer axle ...

What dia is the R6 spindle ?
I'd have thought that would be the place to start, that would make the bearings standard at least

the r6 axle is realy large in diameter. i asked steve from speedwerks. he said to use stock axle and replace bearings. i would have to space out the 3tj swinger. i will post on here with details and pics when i get it done. the wheels are beautiful. an light as mess. it is already a close fit. now just got to wait til axle gets here and then figure out rear brake situation. what is a really good rear caliper that has available rebuild kits for em. i was thinking cbr or something that has a horizontal bolt pattern, any suggestions on a caliper?

Not sure where the R6 rear wheel came from ... From what I can see, the R6 axle is 28mm; the wheel bearings are 28x52x12. There ARE 20x52x12 bearings out there; you'll need to replace the sleeve under the roller bearing on the chain side (or press in a 28mm OD x 20mm ID sub-sleeve).

Thanks, i was worried about finding that bearing size. I will check with allballs for those bearings. Wondering about caliper bracket and which caliper to use now. I going to try and mod the 3tj caliper bracket but i will have to see.

Why not look at the R6 rear brake and disc its a straight forward bolt on. You'll need an insert for the spindle but the you just need to bolt it to the swingarm using the 3TJ bracket as a template. You might need to take a bit off to centre the wheel

i swill try the r6 brake caliper setup then. its better anyway since im using the r6 usd front setup. Also, i received my 95 fzr1000 rear wheel axle and chain adjusters today. it is a 20mm axle. yaa so 88 or 89+ fzr1000 is 20mm same as 3tj. It is just about an 1 1/2 inches too long to it will have to be threaded further and cut. other than that it is great. i do have another question and maybe someone has a picture of the 3tj rear axle installed. the swingarm slots are larger than 20mm. i was wondering how the stock wheel spacers look on 3tj? cant find a close up view anywhere on net. thanks again guys for your help. great site this is.

Also bought today the fzs600 rods for my 660 conversion. from a 2001 fzs600 with stampings 5DM on them. hopefully they will fit. i will post a new thread once i receive them. they have the length of the fzr600 and fit the 600r piston (i believe), i cant wait to see.

This is from my 3TJ project - the chaingaurd bracket had broken off so I was putting rivinuts in the swingarm

When the spindle is torqued up the pressure is taken up through the adjuster blocks, the sloped sides center the spindle which is why the slot doesn't need to be so tight onto it.
